I bought my Delorean for $10,000. Listed is the work I have done to
it.
redo seats
new clutch and all hydrolics
new brakes
dismantle transmission and engine to replace all seals and to take
care of some much needed areas.
repainted fascias
replace just about every hose
redo headliners
rebuild steering rack
clean carpets
All that has cost me over $6000 in parts and labor, and I still need
to remove some minor dings, replace dashboard and binnicle,
and......a new frame.
If you are going to buy a Delorean and you want to drive it everyday,
then go all out and get a really nice one and know the history.
Personally, I wanted to revive a sad delorean, I just didn't know how
sad my delorean really was.
Oh, the delorean was my second car, but I did buy it when I was 18.
If you go the way I did, just remember that everything doesn't need
to be done at once, and buy delorean parts. Sometimes they may be a
little bit more, but for the most part they are reasonably price and
you get great service from the dealers. If you would like to know
more about buying a Delorean in this price range, let me know. I'll
share with you everything you want to know. Good luck!

Dave asked what parts were replaced on the suspension system. Marty could
tell you better but basically the old original shocks or struts were replaced
with a new Monroe replacement. The old springs were used again and all we did
was sand blast the dirty cone holder in the rear, and repainted them. Nothing
else was changed but what I got is a softer less harsh ride. Now every bump
doesn't shake the tar out of me and I feel the road better. In effect the new
product brings the ride to a modern level. Hope that helps.

All that is required for adjusting the rear is either adding or deleting the trailing arm pivot bolt shims. This subject is covered in detail in the Workshop Manual at K:08:01. Service Bulletin ST-34-1/82 contains up-dated information on alignment procedures and specifications.
It would be wise to give this information to your alignment people.

I took my 81' to Sears to the other day to have the alignmnet
checked since it had been pulling to the left a little. They managed to get
the front end back in spec but they said that they couln't fighure out how to do
the rear. According to them and the computer the rear is out of spec . Could
someone explain to me how to do the rear so I can tell them how to. According
to their computer printout the spec range is .40degrees - .56degrees. I'm sitting
at .39 right now. I noticed that my car is still pulling to the left so I guess I need
to have it done. Can anyone help?

I just wanted to give everyone a big thanks for all of the
information that you have all posted. I've been lurking around for
the last several months, trying to gather as much information about
DeLoreans as possible so that I would know what to look for when the
time came to fulfill my dream of owning one.
And that time is right now, because I am now the proud new owner of
VIN #3396!! Its a beautiful '81 with a gray interior and wide dealer
stripes. Right now its at PJ Grady's receiving some TLC in the form
of a new alternator, door pistons, and fluid change. I can't
recommend PJ Grady's enough if you're thinking about buying a
DeLorean, by the way. Rob Grady (who sold me the car on consignment)
went above and beyond in helping me select and buy my dream car.
So, it is with great joy that I join the ranks of all the other
DeLorean owners out there and "Live the Dream".

This is for anyone who might be buying a DeLorean for the First time as a
first car.
I agree that you should have a second reliable car when purchasing a
DeLorean so you can still get around while you make your DeLorean look
excellent and run like a champ. Here is a suggestion for the young car owner
who is buying a first car: [I know it is a sin to mention another car over a
DeLorean, but hear me out] See if you can an old VW Scirocco. I recently
managed to find one and will purchase it as a first car and as my daily
driver while I prepare for my DeLorean purchase. This particular VW was
designed by Guigaro (or however you spell his name) who also - suprise -
designed the DeLorean. The similarities are remarkable. The fronts are so
close if a see a silver Scirocco from the distance I get the two confused.
Just a thought from someone who is in the same boat with you.
Also I am not saying to buy this car over the DeLorean (NEVER) but for a
student with limited income, it might be an econmical purchase while you
work on your delorean.

VIN Numbers...
For those new owners that are confused about VINs. The sign off for DMC
owners is the production number of the car. In the case of VIN
SCEDT26T7BD006644 - the production number would be [ 006644 minus 500 which
would be 006144 ] Your sign off number would be VIN 6644.
Any one else can add to this concerning the other parts of the VIN code.

While I mostly agree with this, I want to point out is that it is possible to find
a reliable DeLorean in the $12,000-$15,000 price range that has only cosmetic
faults. You can drive a car with dented stainless, sagging headliners, cracked
leather, a faded dashboard, or ripped carpeting. Unfortunately, when you find a
car with these cosmetic faults it is very likely to have some hidden mechanical
problems. Either way, you can put off cosmetic repairs as long as you can stand
to look at the faults.
If anyone is considering a DeLorean as a daily driver, also remember the $1,600

driver running. If you spend less than that this year, plan to spend more next
year. Sometimes a lot more. If you plan to do restoration work while driving the

Absolutely. If you plan on driving *any* 10+ year old car every day, you had
better assume some unscheduled down time for repairs. If you have another car for
winter driving, you can improve this by doing some maintenance and repairs during
the winter.

In fact talking about similarities between the delorean and other cars,
there are too many too mention. Obviously the delorean had an influence or
else the same top industry guys that worked on the delorean worked on these
other cars.
For instance the backlights on the delorean are strickingly alike to that of
an older camaro. Also Mazda and Nissan I believe both had cars with front
lights like the delorean. And that Scirocco is a great example, I've seen
them before and saw the similarities but never knew the model and make.

Relatively speaking, I don't think most DeLorean parts are that out
of line with other cars in it's class, or collector cars in general.
My favorite example is the quarter panel that needed replacing on my
now ex-wifes Honda Accord - over $1100. The same DeLorean part is
$997. Or windshields - under $400 for a DeLorean, for a C4 Corvette,
$744. Note that these examples are all for new parts from dealers.
Keep in mind that in 1981, the car was compared (by the magazines, at
least) against Ferrari, Maserati, Porsche, as well as Corvettes.
Regarding discount clubs - De Lorean Motor Company offers the "Budget
Restoration Program". Simply spend $1500 on anything we sell (parts
only, not labor), and all future parts purchases (excepting kits,
which are already deeply discounted) receive a 10% discount for 12
months. Several DML'ers are already a part of this program. You don't
even have to spend the $1500 all at once, simply spend $1500 within
12 months, and the next 12 months get a 10% discount for the next 12
months.

Is it feasible to cover the stainless panels of a Delorean with window tint
film? I've been thinking for a long time about how cool it would be to
'paint' a Delorean without damaging the stainless texture. If one or two
panels on a car are damaged and can't be economically restored without body
fillers and paint, then why screw up the rest of the car by painting the
good panels, too?
If window tint film wouldn't be practical, then what about a decal/bumper
sticker material like those wood grain decals they used on stationwagons?
Wouldn't a wood grain Delorean look just awful?
I watched someone tint a wrap-around back window with one piece of film. He
used a heat gun to stretch the film to fit. I was wondering if something
similar could be done with a fender. I know that window tint film is
sensitive to ammonia based cleaners and may not hold up well to the
elements, but couldn't the film then be waxed or clear coated? How about a
real dark black-out film followed up with another layer of very light bronze
limo tint film? That would give an even deeper shine.
If there are any minor dings to cover up, these could first be filled with
drywall compound and then 'sanded' with a wet sponge until smooth. This
wouldn't damage the fender and would be easy to wash off in case someone
later wanted to remove the tint film and repair the dent.
Perhaps a car body completely covered in window tint film could then be
painted over. When you are tired of the color, you could strip the tinting
off and start fresh from bare stainless.

Yes, the mirror was from the Pep Boyz. Funny that they don't carry it where
you live, but I suppose different areas have different mixes of models on
the road. I was working in an auto parts store (installing their computer)
for a few days where they pretty much lookd at each customer as they entered
and asked "Ford or Chevy?" I think there was one customer the whole time I
was there that had one of those "exotics" like a Volvo or Volkswagon and he
was laughed out of the store.
Anyway, I'm still a bit iffy on this mirror. The left side is a bit tall
and tends to bind to the housing, making it difficult to adjust. Even if
cut, the right side is not parallel to the housing, and would therefore look
a bit "off" or require another cut. Since the DMC mirror is basically a
rectangle with one of the short lengths cut at an angle, I'd think any
rectangular convex mirror could be made to fit perfectly in 2 cuts.
If you really want them, Bob, I'll be happy to send as many as you like, but
bear in mind that they're about $12 apiece. I'm still a bit appalled that
your local shop doesn't have any oversize convex mirrors you can cut. Any
self-respecting auto parts shop will special-order any part in the catalog,
