I e-mailed the owner and this is what he said
Erik,
I collect TV/Movie cars & related items ... I got these panels
in a
large
lot of stuff I purchased a couple of years back when I was out in
California.
To make a long story short, it's most likely (given where I got
them)
that
these were spare parts for the "Back To The Future" DeLorean. In
scenes
where vehicles are destroyed (like the train track scene in
BTTF),
movie
companies dont prefer to trash a "real" car, so they build mock-
ups &
the
like, and/or replace damaged parts with less expensive (like
fiberglass)
parts. These partictular panels appear to be in new/unused
condition.
I also have an entire fiberglass front nose section for a
DeLorean
here
too ... it too was in with that same stuff. (And there's likely
more if
I really
ever take the time to go thru it all. :-)

This idea has come up numerous times before, and I think I'm going to be brave enough to try it. I have an 83, no flap. But we all know that the fiberglass underside of the hoods has the marking for the flap. The car has to go into the shop for some reconstructive surgery, so while it's there, I'm going to see about doing the fuel flap. This guy is good with stainless steel, he's proved that already. So we'll see what happens. Wish me luck!!

ALL the brake (and clutch) master cylinders sold by the major parts
suppliers are aftermarket. There are no significant quantities of the
originals left.
Original clutch SLAVE cylinders are still available, and are what is
regularly sold by all the major vendors. We install them regularly
with no problems. Worries about seals and pitted bores and are
unfounded.

Subject: New Fascia Paint - Europe
Hi!
I just got my local garage to paint my front and rear fascias on my DeLorean
VIN #06759. I gave them the DAU / DBC code, but they couldn't find any
match. I post this message because I would guess that this is valid for
other European owners also. American paint codes don't always correspond
over here.
Anyway, what I did was to let my mechanic choose the silver color out of a
catalog. I would have never gotten around to decide which one to use, so I
trusted him to do that. Well, guess what? The new paint is 100% identical to
the original one on the car. So my tip is - let your garage match up the
right color! I think the color used on my car was an OPEL/VAUXHALL SILVER
PAINT. I can get the color code for those interested.
Best wishes

Scott,
If you think you are lazy....after I removed the binnacle on my car,
I noticed that whoever owned the car when it passed over the 30,000 mark,
instead of resetting the Lambda service counter and putting in a new O2
sensor, they actually spent the time of removing the binnacle and removing
the Lambda warning light bulb. I still don't understand why they would go
through all the trouble of removing the binnacle to remove the light bulb,
but not replace the O2 sensor and reset the counter instead. The wonders
mechanics do to "troubleshoot" a problem on a car they don't know anything
about.

Customs is requesting a letter from the manufacturer stating that the
Delorean meets EPA emissions and DOT safety standards for the year in which

anyone have any experience bringing Deloreans into the USA (I know they tend

Subject: Late Model Exhaust Pipes and Concours
Tom (and others) -
It's not a matter of DMC Houston not believing you about the exhaust
pipes, it's a matter of what the factory documentation says was
installed on cars with your VIN. Concours is NOT only about
originality. If that was the case, there quite a few 'original' cars
in existence in far worse shape than yours that would be excellent
concours candidates.
In a previous life I had a great deal of experience with NCRS - the
National Corvette Restorers Society. Judging an NCRS Corvette is
incredibly more intense that judging Millennium, the De Lorean Motor
Company Concours. Judges literally are required to time how long seat
belt buzzers run, and measure the distance the cigarette lighter is
ejected. Checking date codes on parts is commonplace as well. Why is
this? Because people will spend literally hundreds of thousands of
dollars preparing their cars for Bloomington, the greatest of all
Corvette shows. When that much money is spent, it becomes incredibly
more difficult to judge, hairs become thinner and thinner to split.
As I've said before, because of the brief and turbulent history of
the original De Lorean Motor Company, documentation was certainly not
their primary concern. Keeping the doors open and building cars was
the priority. The Concours Judging Manual (which all pre-registered
competitors receive prior to the event, and is freely downloadable
from the De Lorean Motor Company web site) was written based upon
literally thousands of pages of documentation from the original De
Lorean Motor Company we acquired with the purchase of the parts from
KAPAC. Significant other documentation was provided by Lief Montin,
the National Parts Manager for the original De Lorean Motor Company.
All the documentation used in the creation of the manual is available
for inspection at any event. When we open our new facility later this
year, ALL the documentation will be available for viewing at any time
by appointment.
We have the original ECA (Engineering Change Authority) files on the
DeLorean. Supposedly, any time a change was made in the production of
the DeLorean, one of these was completed and routed through the
engineering department. All of them have an area where the beginning
VIN is to be noted - many times this is blank. All of them have an
area where the 'reason' for the change is to be noted (reason for the
change is hood styles? 'Management Decision'.) There are over 4000 of
these that we know of. In some instances, these forms are noted as
retroactive, meaning the change occurred before the ECA was formally
approved.
We also have the original "QA Inspection" files for parts that came
in from vendors (someone in the Belfast factory spot-checked incoming
parts, like fascias, louvres, nuts, bolts, seats, etc). Many of these
are marked as "Supplied part does not match specification, accepted
on authority of Engineering Department". That means that the part was
not exactly right, but they used it anyway.
What this all means is that the vast majority of DeLoreans are
unique. How and where do you draw the line? According to the
documentation, exhaust tips were installed on all cars after VIN
10000. This same memo lists the intro points for ASI radios, etc. The
memo ends with the sentence "some items on the list above may have
been introduced earlier".
In the very last days of the original De Lorean Motor Company, when
your car was built, who's to say they didn't run across a pallet full
of the earlier style exhaust systems and install them on cars? I
can't say that they didn't, all I can say is the documentation says
THEY SHOULDN'T HAVE. Does that make your car any less valuable? Only
to a dyed in the wool concours freak. Would you be better off welding
on a set of flared tips to your exhaust? If I REALLY wanted to win in
concours, and two points stood between me and trophy, you can bet
your behind I would.
I welcome anyone to continue this discussion with me via private
email if desired.

Most Likely they are the panels off of one of the "Black Cars," the ones
that the factory put fiberglass panels on because there were no SS panels
available to put on the cars, SS panels were also un necessary for the
testing purposes that the cars were built for. There is a fiberglass
underbody but there is nothing like that directly on the panels. The
panels are pure SS.

Subject: Re: cooling fan question
Marc,
Your right. When you turn on the air condition the fans come on and cycle as
the pressure sensors dictate.
The Fan Zilla as I under stand it staggers this operation so the main
relay that supplies most of the power to the car doesn't get a 60-80 amp all
at one time. It works great and does what it supposed to do.
The Fan Fix also plugs into the relay sockets and allows the car to
operate as normal, but it doesn't take the power from the main relay. It
releives the main relay of this duty and diverts it to the battery. By doing
this, it also solves some of the low voltage problems of the car, such as
dyeing at a stop light when at an idle, lights dimming so on. Also by
diverting the drain the coil also doesn't see a major voltage drop for a loss
of power, even while driving. Thusn the bucking as you say it is down to a
hop if that.

J.B.,
The fans are supposed to alternate as the compressor cycles. That's normal.
If a circut breaker is getting old and weaking, then you may see a more rapid
cycling. Then it would be time to replace it the circut breaker.

Subject: Lambda Unit
The Lambda unit on my D is dead. I am guessing that this could be the cause
of a host of problems with my car -- lack of power, frequency valve not
buzzing and flunking Arizona's emission test. Would this unit be responsible
for all of the items I have just listed and would the dead lambda unit cause
any other problems I should be aware of ? Since my car has always driven
like this since I have owned it, my guess is that it will be a big change
once I get this thing fixed. Also, is this something that can be repaired or
just replaced as I believe it is a few hundred bucks for a new one. Thanks

I'm no mechanic however, I bought a master cylinder from Auto Zone on the
advice of this column. The part number may be supplied by someone else on
this list who is more file oriented. The part fit perfectly and looked
identical to the one removed. A minor problem was removing the screws
holding the translucent resevoir which did not come with the new unit. The
old one had to be taken back as a trade- in. I think it was a Saab part.

procedure. If the cable broke outside of the outer cable, replacement will
be relatively easy. If the cable broke inside the outer cable it would be
best to replace the entire unit; i.e.: Inner and outer. This will involve
removal of the center console.

priced at $19.45. If the outer and inner sections need to be replaced they
are priced at $83.50, ask for part number 100485.

Subject: Charlotte NC car show
Hi everyone. I just wanted to get the word out that Charlotte is having a great car show. It is held at Lowes Motor Speedway on September 14-17. This show is held twice a year (in the spring and in the fall). I saw my first DeLorean (in person) there this spring. I think it would be great if several DeLoreans could come this fall. This is a really great show. The car show is held all down pit row, and all the cars for sale line the entire length of the track. There is usually a Kruse auction too. In the center of the track is more cars and vendors of all sorts. This is THE biggest car show I have ever been to, so it is really worth bringing your car. Since I am a freshman at UNC Charlotte (which is 2 miles from the speedway), I intend on being there daily. If anyone is interested, you can let me know <louiegolden@xxxxxxxxx> , or you can go to Hemmings Motor News website for exact details. Hope to see you there!-

PS- Me and one of my friends have spotted a DeLorean in my hometown of Sanford, NC. If this is you, I would really like to talk with you. -Thanks!!

Subject: Re: Importing a Delorean to the USA (Curious about Customs)
Just a thought, but how do you get Customs papers from a company that
"theoretically" doesn't exist anymore. ANd also wouldn't another DeLorean in
the US already provide proof of the emissions and other requirements since
DMC emissions for the PRV-6 were already met for BOTH cars (Canadian and US)
because the have the same engine.
Just wondering??

Subject: Straight skinny on Hot Start Relay
To all regarding the 'hot start relay' -
As Joe said, there is no such thing. It was never used by the
original De Lorean Motor Company. If someone thinks they need it,
they have another problem that needs proper diagnosing. It is the
opinion of Stephen Wynne that the use of a hot start relay poses a
fire risk, too.
Bottom line - trust the professionals who make their living working
on DeLoreans in this instance. If you think you need a hot start
relay, call your DeLorean service center of choice and get a proper
diagnosis - don't monkey with the fuel OR electrical systems of your
car.

Subject: DeLorean with twin turbo
I was wondering who owned VIN 502, the only DeLorean with the experimental
Twin Turbo? Is it DeLorean One? I think I read that DeLorean One had one of
the Twin Turbo engines for display, and not for putting in a DeLorean.
Wouldn't that be cool to see the Twin Turbo engine, or even VIN 502 at the
next DeLorean Car Show? (Ken?)
