Subject: Broken Shift Linkage

On the way home in traffic today I had problems shifting from 1st
gear into second. I've had this problem before, and I've cured it by
spraying the shift linkage with WD-40 to lubricate it. For the past
week the problem appeared to have returned, but I hadn't had time yet
to lube everything. Anyhow, it got to the point where I was unable to
shift from 1st to 2nd at all. While accelerating from a stop this
happened again, so I used a bit more force to get it into 2nd. It
went in, but with a LOUD clunk! When I shifted again there was no
resistance at all forward and aft. Left and right seems ok, and the
cable looks to still be in place. But when I move the gearlever
forward and back, it sounds like the front gearchange tube is
scraping across the bottom of the chassis. First off, has anyone else
here had this type of problem before? Second, could it jest be that
the nut on the adjustable gear tube has just come loose, or is it
probable that the bolt may have been stripped? (I hope the bolt on
the relay lever isn't broken!) Since I just got home now, I havent
yet had the chance to get under the car to inspect the linkage
(Farmers Insurace Tow Service took 5 hours to send a truck out to
me!!!).

To do a quick check for the oil filter to see if it will fit your
car, look at the rubber seal. The thinner filter that fits will have
the rubber right up next to the edge. The wider one will have a gap
between the rubber and the edge. In order to get the wider filter to
fit you'll need to bend the oil pressure sending unit. Not really
something you want to do.

Subject: Re: Blue Fan Fail Module

Richard,

As an electronic technician you will notice by my description that the Fan
Fail Module is a relatively simple device. If you have a workshop manual go
to M:18:19, the entire cooling fan circuit is located at the upper right of
the schematic wiring diagram.

The design concept of the Fan Fail relay is nothing more than a device that
would sense excessive current draw from one of the two cooling fans and
switch on the "Fan Fail" warning light to inform the driver of a possible
problem with one of the cooling fans. It is normal for the warning lamp to
illuminate for a second or two whenever the fans switch on. There are two
problems with the relay and the circuit design.

Problem one: the 12v supply for both fans go through the relay.
Problem two: the cooling fan current draw exceeds the current rating of the
relay.
Result: the relay will eventually overheat and melt down. When this happens
not only does the Fan Fail warning light cease to operate, so do the cooling
fans. This could lead to engine overheating possibly causing permanent
damage to the engine block.

There are several temporary fixes but the best and easiest to install item
is the
Fanzilla.

Robert, The WD40 will wash away the grease needed uner the shifter boot it's
only 5% oil and won't stay around long. I use wheel bearing grease. It won't
melt down due to heat and it will stay with the parts. If you can, take it
apart, clean it down then grease it up good. That will take care of the top.
Naturally look for worn parts to replace. Then, There is a sleeved bolt
underneath the car that the shifting linkage swivles on. This bolt could have
been replaced with a straight bolt and could be causing the problem. Again,
replace if necessary, clean and regrease. You may need to get another person
to mess wift the shifter while your underneath looking. Then futher back is
the adjustments. Clean and grease. I have done this to three cars and they
worked out fine.

Cable?  It has been some time since I worked on this area of the car,
but as I recall the DeLorean uses a rod shifter.

I had a shift failure a few years back, where I went to shift and heard
a loud bang.  The stick became very loose and I could not shift.  After
the car was towed home, I got under it and found that the pivot bolt on
the shift linkage had snapped.  I got a new bolt at Pep Boys, and used
some washers to try and simulate the shoulder on the stock bolt.  It got
the car back up and running.  Then a call to PJ grady for a new
"correct" bolt with the shoulder.

I was lucky, as the bolt broke such that I could get it out easily.

I have been told that the DeLorean needs good oil flow, and the Purflux
filter design has better flow than most of the other filters.  Some of
the other filters sacrifice flow in order to keep the pressure up.  I
dont know if this is good for the DeLorean.

The Delorean Fall Foliage Tour October 20-22 looks like it could be
the biggest Delorean event in the Northeast this year!
So far DeLorean's from 7 states will be participating (PA, NJ, NY,
CT,RI, NH and MA).
It only cost $35 per person to register, which includes a complete
dinner, followed by a tech session back at the hotel with Rob Grady as
the guest speaker. I have arranged for a special hotel rate of $90.75
per night at the Pleasant View in right on the ocean 1-800 782-3224
see http://www.pvinn.com/ (you must mention the Delorean group to get
the special rate). For more details and a copy of the Itinerary go to

Robert said,

-----------------------------------------------------------

NO NO NO!!!!!!
You don't have to bend anything to use the larger filter. Don't take a short
cut like that, do the job correctly. You can buy a brass fitting that will
create the desired angle of the oil sending unit so that it will not make
contact with the larger oil filter. Make sure that you use a brass adapter,
as steel will cause damage to the aluminum casing. You can get the brass
fitting at most auto parts stores.

I use the Volvo oil filter, which is a larger filter. This filter has the
needed pressure valve, that traps the oil in the filter when the engine is
shut off. This valve prevents engine wear on start up. Remember that the oil
filter sits in a side ways position and the oil in a filter, with out the
valve, will run out when the engine is shut off. Which means, upon engine
start, you have no oil going to the engine, until the filter is supplied
with oil again. (If the oil filter does not read on the side of the casing
that it has the pressure valve, most likely it does not have one in it.)

The Volvo oil filter cost $9 and some change and an oil change , which
includes the filter is $24.99. Well worth the price. (You may have to supply
the tool for the drain plug.)

Subject: State Farm Insurance - LONG (Really long)

Dear List:

I live in Connecticut and a few months back I noticed a sign that said that
State Farm was back in Connecticut and issuing new policies. I decided to
call and get quotes on two cars, the DeLorean and my first home. I was amazed
at how great the quotes were and decided to sign on. I have the DeLorean
insured as a part time use vehicle, with restrictions of 2,500 miles/year.
All was well until this past Monday...

I received a certified letter in the mail stating that my policy would be
canceled as of August 29, 2000, and the reason was, and I will quote, "This
risk is ineligible due to the type of vehicle." I was furious, although I
knew that I had the bargaining power of a few policies that I was sure they
didn't want to loose. I immediately called the auto underwriter, who was the
same person that signed the letter and asked him what the heck was going on.
He first started by saying that the DeLorean was too much of a risk for them
to insure (I thought that is what an insurance company did, insure a risk). I
asked him what he based his decision on. He told me that for starters, the
parts availability was scarce and that if there was a claim, it would be
difficult to get the car repaired and it would cost them too much. Before he
finished, I stopped him in mid sentence and said "...this is exactly what all
underwriters, including yourself, don't understand about the DeLorean." I
proceeded to tell him about the parts warehouse in Ohio and the estimated 20
year supply of parts they had. I also told him that there were at least 2
major service centers in California, the new DeLorean Motor Company in
Houston, which controls the parts warehouse, another repair facility in Ohio
and P. J.  Grady in Long Island, not to mention some of the others like
Darryl Tinnerstet and DMC Joe, all of which stock parts. His response was
"Ohh...uhh...I wasn't aware of that." I also said that parts prices and labor
rates were not all that much in comparison to German cars and many high end
vehicles. He then cut in and said that beyond that, there are many gray
market vehicles coming into the United States and that this didn't sit well
with State Farm. At that point I ripped into him and said "...again, this is
what most underwriters don't understand, including yourself. The DeLorean was
designed for the US market and that approx. 90% were shipped to the US and
that there is no gray market for the vehicle." I went on to further explain
that at this time, many vehicles are being sold to people in Europe,
Australia, Asia, etc., and that most of those vehicles need conversion for
THEIR markets, since DOT laws are different here in the US. Again, he was
perplexed. He then started by saying that if something were to happen to my
car, like a fire, etc., and they had to replace and repair most of the
vehicle, it would cost more than it was worth. I told him that that statement
didn't make much sense, but if that was the case, wouldn't the insurance
company then "total" the car and reimburse me the stated value? He began to
double talk and said..."well, uhh, I guess that's not a good example." Before
he said anything more, I said "power, want to talk about that?" I told him
that the car didn't have much power for a sports car, that any new 4 cylinder
car could eat my car for breakfast. "Safety, how about that? Did you know
that the DeLorean was rated one of the safest (if not the safest) car in
1981. Theft? O.K., these cars are rarely stolen because if it was, how would
you be able to take it any where or ship it to another country, without
drawing attention?" I didn't say to him that the DeLorean never gets broken
into, but it is at risk like each and every vehicle on the road today
(actually, now that I think of it, who would break into a DeLorean for
anything of value like GPS, or air bags, etc., since most, if any, don't even
have those devices, especially and air bag?) and again he sounded dumbfounded
on the phone.

I told him that if he needed any type of documentation on parts availability,
prices, repair facilities, etc., to let me know and I would supply him with
what ever he needed. I told him that he should get his facts together before
making the decision to cancel my DeLorean policy, especially since this
cancellation would affect the other policies I had with State Farm and I
wouldn't stand for such a flagrant decision on his part or State Farms'
either. I asked him if State Farm insured other DeLoreans in the US and he
said they did, but only as an addition to an existing policy, not for new
policy holders. He went on to say that because my rep was new and State Farm
just came back into Connecticut, that my agent wasn't aware of that policy. I
told him that it wasn't my fault that the agent didn't know that and why
should I be the one to loose out on the whole deal?

He told me he would reevaluate the policy, speak with my agent and his office
people and get back to me on Tuesday. Just as he said, he called on Tuesday
and said that he was sorry for the misunderstanding and that he "will rescind
the cancellation of my policy and would include a note in my file regarding
our conversation and will make sure this doesn't happen in the future."
Safely said, I will not hear about this issue again. I asked him if he wanted
that documentation and he said that he didn't, though he would like to send
out the agent so he could take a few pictures and gather some info on the
car.

I have had more trouble insuring my car than I would have ever expected.
Progressive was charging an arm and a leg, and Allstate wanted a small
fortune. Hagerty would not accept my application because at the time I was on
my parents policy and they have a rule that each licensed driver must have
separate insurance or their underwriters would not write the policy. What a
debacle, but it is finally over! The advise I have is to contact the person
that makes those decision, as I did and try to educate them and stay firm and
know your facts. Don't give in and always counter an argument with a better
one. Although I have won my case, it may not always be in favor of the
DeLorean owner.

Because of the sensitivity of this issue, I ask that this not be used as
ammunition against State Farm or any other insurance company, but rather as
incentive to fight back for those who have been turned down or canceled. I am
sure that each insured DeLorean owner is happy knowing that there policy is
still in effect and I would hate to see mine get reevaluated because someone
shows an underwriter this letter or uses me as a direct example. Each
insurance company has access to their records and can get the information on
which cars they insure and where they have them insured.

Sorry it was so long, but I thought it may be beneficial to our ongoing
insurance issue.

Thanks,
Joshua Schwartz

My insurance is thru Progressive... I pay an annual of around $1,900... about
$150ish a month for 11 months.  I have FULL coverage and have the car insured
at $25,000, the price I bought it for.
I've been with Progressive a little over a year now and I have no complaints.

Then again, I haven't had any wrecks or speeding tickets either...

Hope this helps.

Subject: DeLorean for sale (again)

Group,

OK, heres the deal. I had lots of responses about my car for sale,
but I put the car in the shop, and decided to keep it after it was fixed.
Well, I have decided I will sell it for the right offer. I was asking
$9,000, but with all the work I have done to it, and given what others are
selling their cars for, I am asking somewhere between $12,000 and $13,000.
This car is definately worth it. Here are some details.

1981 DeLorean. Nov. 81 build, VIN 7003

Grey interior, 5-speed, with 49,500 miles.

New parts - radiator, water pump, cooling hoses, voltage regulator, brake
master cylinder, oil pressure sending unit, air intake hose, muffler heat
shield, label set, wheel caps, belts, etc..

Has had all fluids changed, including brake and has had the clutch adjusted
and bled (has adjustable clutch line). With all these parts the car runs
like new with no problems. Runs VERY cool. Windows, locks, gauges, radio,
mirrors, and A/C work. The interior is VERY clean with new DMC floor mats,
and the leather seats are in good condition (very slight checking on the
passenger side). The exterior is perfect with the exception of a couple of
tiny dings in the hood. They are so small a camera won't even pick them up.
The front are rear fascias have been painted black and are very straight. If
you want a DeLorean you can drive everyday...this is the one for you. The
car is in Huntsville, and anyonw who would like to look at it is welcome. I
have no pics at this time online, but am trying to do this soon. Thanks
again guys~!

How hard would it be to install a steering column with tilt?  My legs barely

replacing the steering column with tilt or something, that would be a big
help.

Actually State Farm publishes a booklet of cars that they will insure and what
the rate is for each one for each class of driver, including all factors you
mentioned.  I was shown a copy of this booklet when I went to see about having
mine insured.  I did not notice whether the booklet was region or state specific,
but the DeLorean WAS listed in the one I saw.  Ask your agent if he has a copy of
this booklet handy...maybe this will help resolve the issue.

This insurance issue comes up on the list every so often   and I belive
we've about beat the subject to death this time around so unless something
really revolutionary shows up I'm killing this thread for the week.

Check the manual - I think the column is adjustable.  There is a dial
under the dash on the right side of the steering wheel, if I remember
right.

(And if I'm wrong, someone please correct me!)

Subject: Tripin' Cooling Fans and Fanzilla

As some of you may know, during the Friday cruise in Cleveland last month,
my Fanzilla equipped Cooling fan circuit would trip offline.  What really
puzzled me was the fact that the "Fan Failed" warning light never came on.
I thought perhaps that the bulb had failed.  In fact, later that day, when
me and my car had cooled off, I performed the test in the Fanzilla
troubleshooting guide.  I removed each Fanzilla fuse (20A) and the "Fan
Failed" light worked.  Strange you ask?  So did I.  The existing breaker in
the circuit was cycling.  Note that this breaker was upgraded to 35A after
my trip to the Los Angeles expo two years ago.  I checked all of the spade
connectors in the circuit.  They were clean and tight.  The fan grounds were
clean and tight.

Here is the Fatal Flaw with the Fanzilla.  When the existing circuit breaker
opens, all power is lost to both cooling fans and the Fanzilla.  Why do I
consider this to be Fatal you may ask, because when the breaker opens  there
is no power for the "Fan Failed" warning light or the Fans.  You better be
scanning your gauges when driving in Hot Weather.

DMC Joe posted an idea recently that suggested a jumper in place of the
circuit breaker in the Cooling Fan Circuit.  Since the Fanzilla has built in
fuse protection for both cooling fan circuits, I installed a jumper.  The
jumper became extremely  hot.  Note, all connectors are clean and tight.  I
let things cool down and started with cool wiring.  It turns out that the NS
colored wire was heating up first, not the jumper.

Since the circuit breaker/thermal trip #193 is made redundant by the fuses
in the Fanzilla, I decided that I would remove it and the NO/NS wires.  It
turns out that the length or the NO & NS wires between #112,  #193 and #191
totaled 68 inches.  That's sixty eight inches.  The N wire, battery hot +
was moved from #112 over to replace the NS wire on #191.  This takes the
little gray loop of wire out of the circuit and now the only wires that get
hot are the ones in the Fanzilla.

By doing this, I eliminated 68" of heater wire, a thermal trip/breaker and
the now the "Fan Failed" light can not be defeated.  The Fanzilla does start
the compressor and each fan separately as designed.  Another, more
complicated way to ensure that the "Fan Failed" light would work, is if
there was a separate power source for that portion of the circuit.

I typed this real slow, so I hope you have been able to follow along.   ; )

You will need to look at the schematic diagrams and the Fanzilla Manual to
see what I am describing.

WARNING...WARNING......DO NOT REMOVE/BYPASS THE BREAKER IF YOU DO NOT
HAVE
THE FANZILLA, IN FACT DO NOT USE ANY OF THIS INFORMATION IF YOU YOURSELF
ARE
NOT COMFORTABLE WITH ELECTRICAL DEVICES AND UNDERSTAND
COMPLETELY WHAT I
HAVE DONE TO MY CAR..

Let the debate begin.

Subject: "Hot Wheels" type DeLoreans

Awhile ago someone gave me a little DeLorean toy car when I bought some D
manuals off e-bay.  It's metal, 2  3/4 inches long, the doors open, stock
DeLorean.  The bottom says "DE LOREAN     P374  and has a Z in a circle
emblem.  My wife put it out in the display case at our business, and kids
keep asking if it's for sale!  I always say, "No, but you can take a look at
the real thing in the parking lot out back."  So, does anybody know where I
can buy little toy cars like this?  What a bizarre thing to sell in a bakery,
eh?

Subject: Gone for awhile.

To ALL:

To all interested DML list members and our moderators -

It appears that the ISP provider for Radiance Software/Totalimmersion LLC
has gone belly
up stranding most of it's ISP clients.  I have had no end of problem with
this ISP as many of the limited edition owners know. Over the week end
ISPChannel simply shut down their servers and dumped all its clients
Internet and e-mail files.

This means that all the limited edition mail and replies over the week end
and up until about an hour ago were lost for ever.

Ken Montgomery and I have spent all day attempting to correct what we
thought was our problem only to discover that the ISPChannel simply decided
not to be in the provider business and pulled the plug. Radiance and
Totalimmersion are for all practical purposes out of business on the
Internet until a new provider can be found, domain name transfers completed
and setting up all new sites.

Ken has managed to get ISPChannel to set up Radiance for a few days as an
accommodation (probably to avoid facing legal consequences).

Please: if you have sent me e-mail regarding your edition or expected to
hear from me over the past 5 days, expect that those e-mails were dumped
and lost for ever.

Please: don't worry as soon as Ken and I get moved and e-mail running we
will announce it here.
I will re-post all the replies that may not have gotten sent. I will
continue to finish up the old edition and setting up the extension. Again
if you were becoming an edition owner or had questions, all that will pick
up when I have on-line e-mail access again.

I apologize to the list members for having to use this forum and the waist
of time but I don't know of any other fast fix for the problem, and did not
want any edition owners to feel I was just not bothering to reply or answer
edition questions.

Thanks again.......

Subject: Theft Survey.. just curious

Hello All,

I've been pondering the chance of having a Delorean stolen or broken into.
So, what better source of info than the DML.  So, if people would be kind
enough to *email me*  (heskin@xxxxxxxxxxxxxxxx)  the answers to these
questions, I'll compile the results and post a summary in about a week.
Unfortunately, the eGroups Poll only handles one question at a time, so I
couldn't use that facility.

1. Have you ever had your Delorean stolen?
2. If so, was it recovered?  It's condition upon returning home?
3. Have you heard of anyone else's Delorean being stolen?
4. Optional: How much theft protection do you currently have on your D?
(Alarm, fuel/ignition/battery cut-offs, LoJack, The Club, etc.)
5. Have you ever had your Delorean broken into?
6. If so, how was it done? (picked lock, broken window [toll or fixed
window?])
7. Do you think it is necessary to invest in theft and/or break-in
protection? How much?

Please answer by question number or quote the question in your answer.
Thanks for your time.

Subject: Strange hesitation

Now, I think I know the answer to this one, but I just want to make sure for peace of mind.  Today, I drove the DMC about 40 miles or so, performed great.  Went into a movie theater, came out 2 hours later in the middle of a downpour.  Started the car, it sputters, finally starts, and all the way home (20 miles or so) it acts like this. A constand miss, so to speak.  Is this water getting into the distributor?  If not, what's happened?  Thanks!!

Scott
