I called around for insurance a couple of weeks back (I'll be purchasing a
delorean in the next couple of weeks.) and got a quote of $1400/yr for
comprehensive coverage (25/50/25) from State Farm. The annual cost goes up
to $1600/yr for 100/300/100. Note that this is in MD, and I am over the
age of 25. YMMV, etc, etc.

DML,
I've been searching the archive for about 45 minutes and cannot find
one listing regarding cross over Oil Filters! My car came with
several Purflux filters so I didn't need to buy one but I'm now at a
point where I need to. I know some are a bit large but I used to use
Frams on my first car with no problem. I just can't recall the
filter number. Anyone have any concerns about Mobil One filters?
Any thoughts about Fram or the "Tough Guard" Fram filter?.
What is the best Oil grade for the Northeast?(10-30, 10-40, 20-50?)
I use only Mobil One as it still flows when temps drop to the minus
numbers!
Thanks
Tom

Subject: Re: door guides; plus a story
There are at least 3 different metal door guide sets, with part numbers
W300004, W300007, and W300008. I have all 3 in stock, but due to production
inconsistencies you really need to be able to trial fit them to the specific
car. I have also seen gray plastic guides, but don't have the number at
hand for them.
Now for a short story - like most DeLoreans, even my modified car seems to
have a constant battery drain. So several years ago I installed on the side
of the battery a "Battery Buddy" which automatically cuts the power when it
senses a drain over a period of time. It has always worked well and I never
have a dead battery. But it does have one unexpected quirk. Saturday, a
small contingent of PNDC DeLoreans participated in a local parade, the
second largest in the state. Midway through the route, as I led the group,
suddenly my tach went nuts; then the motor died and all power was gone! It
occurred to me that with the lights flashing, radio on, and newly charged
A/C on full blast, even my 108 amp Delco alternator was overtaxed at an
idle. The Buddy did its job - it saved my battery! So, as we coasted
downhill my wife had to lean forward while I fumbled in the battery
compartment for the reset switch while trying not to run over the float
ahead of us. Although it was a little embarassing, most onlookers probably
didn't have a clue what happened. All ended well, except that somehow I
managed to fry my Craig (yes, Craig) CD player in the process. I didn't
know low voltage could do that.

Nate,
Congrat's on the Delorean, at least let's hope so :-) As far as info on
Insurance, all I can offer is quite a few of us in this area (metro St Louis
- ILL) have insurance thru State Farm. You may have to twist their arm a
little, but they do insure these cars in this area. They also have what is
called a "Classic Car" policy which you can get which is normally cheaper
then regular insurance. Only thing is there may be some restrictions like
mileage limitations or such. Anyway, many State Farm agents don't even know
the Classic Car policy is available thru their company. Good Luck.
Also, let us know if there is anything we can do to help you out. We're a
group of Delorean owners right here in the middle of you're area. Check out
- www.midstatedmc.com - for info on us. We've got about 40-50 people in the
club and we just try and help each other out and have fun. I'm located in
East Alton, about 15 miles north of you. We've got members in O'Fallon,
Belleville, Edwardsville, Mt Vernon, Litchfield, Bethalto etc. You can see
there are a few of us pretty close by.
Matter of fact, we're getting together this Sunday for a cruise and dinner
run, just to have some fun. If you're interested, you're more then welcome to
join in.
Let us know if we can be of any help. Later, Marty

Subject: Blue Fan Fail Module
Hi all,
I'm getting to know my car better (it's been 8 days now) and one thing I
noticed is that I still have the blue Pektron fan fail module
installed. Whenever my fans come on, the light comes on too.
1.) Would this more likely be a fan problem or a module problem? (I think
I know the answer to this)
2.) In what manner does the module fail? Does the light stay on when the
fans are running, or do the fans come on all the time, or not at all, or
what?
3.) I'm an electronic technician in real life, and I can't imagine that
the electronics in this module that's smaller than an egg can be that
complicated. Has anyone ever fixed one? What's in it?
4.) If it does fail interminably, where does the 3-legged jumper wire go
exactly?
Thanks,
Richard Schauer

Checker (Schucks, Kragen) has the DeLorean explicitly in their catalog,
but they sell Fram, of course. I think Autozone has it as well.

Fram filters are not very good. They were, once upon a time, but now they
are pretty much the worst. AC Delco and Deutsch are the best commonly
available ones, IMO.

I would suggest 10W30. 10W40 isn't as good as 10W30 as a rule, and 20W50
is too thick for the northeast.

The DeLorean uses the Bosch K-Jetronic fuel system. This is a good
quality system, but it is an older design without a lot of advanced
electronics. The DeLorean does adjust the mixture ratio using an oxygen
sensor under cruising conditions, as almost all fuel injected cars do, but
it does not have an advanced system of timing control, knock detection, or
other fun things that modern cars do. There is an engine computer, but it
is a very simple one.

Hi--
Thanks folks for all your help regarding the Delorean issue. I tried State

Deloreans since 1989. I told them this wasn't the case...however, they won't
do anything about it without proof of other policies.
However, you can help!! If you have State Farm(full coverage) then please
email me direct with your policy#, name or office(city, state)--also give me

William, I did a little researsh on the oil filters and found that Bosch
makes two kinds for the De Lorean. Medium and small. No other filter in the
Bosch catalog has the spec's but these # 72150 is the larger and 72107 is the
smaller. As best as i can tell by reading the spec no other filter in there
line is made like them. They seem to have a special design to help hold the
pressure under adverse conditions. There is a lot of filters that will screw
on and filter, but these are different. I also know that De Lorean Motor Co
in houston has a special filter also. I wouldn't put just anything on the
car. Since i have 3 D's i buy the filters in case quanity and get them
cheaper.

Don't even think about it. You will not prove them "wrong" no matter what.
Has it occurred to you that if you can compile such a list that State Farm
might use it to cancel existing DeLorean owner's policies? Perhaps State
Farm will not insure a DeLorean, or any other car for that matter, given a
particular driver's profile such as age, claim record, or DMV record.
There are far too many variables, including individual state statutes, to
come to a reasonable conclusion using a broad and far reaching forum as this.
Please allow me to suggest that you limit your search within your state and
to drivers of your age, marital status, driving record, claim record,
criminal record, credit record (YES, credit record!), postal zip code (YES,
that too!), ad nauseam. You will need an entire gaggle of attorneys and a
few million disposable dollars to "prove them wrong", even if then. That's
not to say it can't be done, but all caveats apply. These people hide behind
the skirts of your state's legislatures and their so very powerful lobbyists.
