Subject: A great job of a BTTF mockup
I haven't spoken up in this group until now, but I felt the need to point
this out. As discussed, many of us are against this sort of thing, but I
have no problem saying good job when it's rightfully earned. I came across a
webpage of a young man who converted his DeLorean into a spitting image of
one of the BTTF DeLoreans. The page has pictures documenting his progress
all the way to completion. If you've ever thought about doing this to your
"D," I recommend giving it a look. I work in the Entertainment Industry and
am frequently in contact with some of the actual picture cars from BTTF, this
is a great job! I currently have an Email into the project car owner as to
learn some of his techniques he used in the conversion. (Can you still
access the engine compartment easily? Did you actually drill into the
stainless for mounting purposes? Etc.) I've heard many rumors of Bolt On
Kits available throughout this group, but have never heard or seen any proof
that they exist. If anyone knows... Speak up. I doubt I'd ever do it to
mine, but I have to admit I've thought about it. For show purposes, of
course :)

Ok, well... I was under the impression that production Vin's started at 500.
Is this a pre-production car that snuck its way over? What's going on? Grey
interior? Didn't all of the first production 81's come with black interior?

I believe the dies are made of stainless steel. I also remember Mike Loasby
(former director of engineering, DMCL) talking about testing of the
stainless steel panels on the car which were exposed to a salt environment
equivalent to 50 years, and no damage to the panels! This was discussed in
the documentary "Back From the Future". Now, all that is necessary is to get
the dies up from the ocean and then give them a nice good cleaning. I would
guess they would be "as new".
There has also been some discussion on where these dies came from, somebody
talked about Germany. What I believe is true, is that the stamping company
was based in Ireland, and this company was a smaller division of the German
stamping company LAPPLE. This company was owned money by DeLorean and when
DMCL went to the wall, Lapple sold the dies as scrap - they had no use for
them.
When looking close at the pictures of the molds on the boat, they dont seem
to be very big, however they are probably very heavy!
Maybe the folks restoring the ship that dropped off the dies would be
interested in a "re-union" trip. This time not to drop dies, but to get them
aboard again. (I see a very big crane in those photos) :)
The only thing else needed would be deep sea divers, who would cost quite a
lot of money....Another thing - how deep exactly is the ocean where the dies
were dropped?
Who wants to go fishing?
Ah, one can dream right!
Anyway, it would be great to have those dies recovered. Right now there are
plenty of body parts left (new and used) but I continue to think about the
future of the DeLorean. It would be nice to know that those dies were in
safe hands. Lets give them to DMC Houston :)

Hello List,
well, The exterior of my car is almost finished. After a few thousand
dollars and a lot of hard work I have it pretty much done. It is a mercedes
mirror black right now but is oxidized and very scratched. I plan to repaint
it the same color but leave the rear fascia silver.
The passenger side door is stainless steel but the rest of the car is
already painted. A guy is coming up next week that paints collectible cars
to take a look at it. He said he would like to know a few things about
painting stainless before he took on the job. Can anyone reccomend how we
should prepare the unpainted door? any info would be greatly appreciated. I
stripped a part of the old dented door and it looks like it was sanded at an
angle to the SS grain. what is the best method? The door is perfect and
will require no bondo:)

$65 for 2 Lbs? That's not so bad...
I think Pep-Boys still sells the 12oz cans (NOT 16 Oz) for $18 or so.
You need the EPA permit to purchase it though.
A bit of advice when you buy R-12.. Make sure it it PURE R-12 and not
some crappy blend. Some times they blend R-12 with PROPANE which can be
deadly if you have a leak in the AC system!

Out of curiosity, what's the MPG on your DeLorean?
I put about 300 miles a week (give or take a few) on my car just going to and
from work. I just broke the 30k mark on my odometer last week!
Anyway, over the last FIVE fill-ups...

For the most part, it's straight highway. Once I hit the city, it's stop and
go and up a mountain for a few miles.

Hello,
everyone is familiar with the excellent Fuel Sender from P.J. Grady called
FuelZilla.
But when (what VIN) did the change happen from DMCs Original Fuel Sender to
DMCs Improved Fuel Sender?
I guess that there are three Fuel Senders involved in the story. The first
fuel sender was inaccurate, and didn't really tell you the truth as to how
much fuel there really was leftin your tank. Then Fuel Sender number 2 came
around. What's the story on this one? Is the second Fuel Sender almost the
same as the third - FuelZilla? Is the second Fuel Sender 100% when it comes
to measuring the correct amount of fuel left in your tank. Or are both DMCs
fuel senders rubbish, and FuelZilla the only sensible thing to buy?
Who can tell me more about this?

Actually this is a BTTF front, not a stock DeLorean fascia. The signal
lights are covered by the silver screening that runs the length of the front
bumper, where the blue chase lights are.
