Sure do like most owners do who have no gas flap. Open the hood when filling
your tank. This way you will also be sure not to spill gas down your hood.

I had a similiar problem with my driver side door. I eventually go it
working by
alternating the locks on both sides, then it released. I then sprayed
WD-40 in
the locking unit and sprayed some in the key hole on both doors. I haven't
had a problem since. Your problem might be a little more complex then what
mine
was.

Things like this have happened to me many times, Bill. I got a good deal on my
DeLorean because the previous owner was frustrated with the driver's door, and he
had gotten a good deal on the car for the same reason. My very early car was
made without door guides, and so the latches inside the door seldom lined up
correctly and became badly dameged over the years.
After years of working on this problem, I am very familiar with the inside of the
door mechanism.
The good news is that your late VIN car should have door guides already.
The bad news is that you do not yet have enough information to diagnose this
problem.
When you lock/unlock the door, can you hear a click from both latches? When the
door is unlocked and you pull up on the handle, can you hear a different click
from both latches?
One possibility is that the door is wedged closed. This can happen if someone
pushes the door in such a way that it torques clockwise or counterclockwise as it
closes, with one latch reaching the level of its post before the other latch has
reached its door guide.
If this is the case, you may have one latch closed normally and the other
(probably forward) wedged shut. You might be able to open the door by pulling up
on the inside handle while punching or kicking the forward part of the door. At
the same time you should have someone on the outside pulling up on the bottom
edge of the door. That person should wear gloves.
Try this and let us know what happens. If it works, please note the condition of
your latches and mention it on the DML.

If you previously had you factory door lock powered up you may have a
partially burnt out lock solenoid that is preventing the lock from
releasing. You will have to remove both door panels to access the lock
module. Remove the solenoid and the door should unlock.
This is the reason that we routinely disconnect power to the lock module
whenever we prep a car for service.

My late Nov. 81 vin 6058 had the same problem once. The fault was the
cable that attaches to the interior door latch. Try pushing the latch down
while unlocking the door. If this doesn't work you will have to gently take
off the upper door trim. With the trim off, lift the handle and watch how the
cable sticks. With your fingers or a pair of needle nose pliers, lift the
interior latch and pull of the cable...this should release the door IF this
is the problem.

The number at the end (1176) is a date code. So, this switch was made
in 1976, before the DeLorean was made!
Not that this matters...
However, I have received some information from TRW/Lucas with drawings
of the current switches they offer. They still make a switch that
physically looks the same as the DMC dimmer, but the electrical
specifications are a bit different. I expect the newer dimmer would
work in the DMC application in a acceptable manor. The biggest
difference I can see is that the DMC version has a point where the
maximum resistance is infinity (The circuit is open). The new switch
Lucas has does not do this, so the result may be that you can never turn
the dashboard lights completely off with the dimmer.
As far as the part Dave found, there may be a similar difference here...
Where, the switch will work in the DMC application, but it is not quite
the same as the original.
Dave- Have you measured the "jag" part with a meter?? What is the
maximum and minimum resistance? What does the taper look like? BTW,
thanks for the information and pictures you have supplied so far!

The last warning is very good, but the name of the city is not Lyndhurst, it is
Linndale. Linndale is just outside Cleveland, and that speed trap runs almost
around the clock.
Lyndhurst is another suburb on the other side of town. You should probably be
careful there, too. Take it from an Ohioan who drives conservatively but still
gets ticketed for minor speed violations.

I sorta have some experience here ... An exgirlfriend accidentally splashed
a little paint thinner that had blue paint in it and is caused some light
blue tint to be picked up by the SS. I never got around to trying to get it
off and eventually traded the car for a house (another story). If car #1255
is on this list, there may be a small blue stain on the lower part of the
passenger door. The effect, if I recall correctly, was the light blue SS.

Hey group.
Just bought www.DeLoreanMotorCompany.co.uk
Its not running yet, but it will be soon. The site will be designed
around the old DMC style (blacks and slivers).
It'll have a a big section devoted to the prototype and pre
production cars too. It's kinda like what the corporate website
would look like if it were running today.

Yeah, I wasn't asked, but volunteered my car for the Memorial Day Parade here
in town today (Bridgeton, NJ pop. 19,000.) I dressed it up with flags... no
BTTF stuff! Everybody seemed to enjoy it! My second event in two days.
Yesterday we were at an airshow/car show in nearby Millville, NJ. Parked
next to a beautiful, concours quality, red T-bird hardtop convertible. Man,
you could've done surgery on his engine and not get dirty. Problem is,
everybody was looking at my daily driver D, not his T-Bird ! Practically
backing up against and rubbing their Levi rivets on the guy's car to get a
good look at mine. After awhile, the poor guy moves his baby to a "safer"
location. Oh well, as Rick and I always say, nothing can "catch eyeball"
like a D!

I am the orig. owner of VIN 6924. The "Silver Bullet" has taken me to 3 DOA
Expos, as well as on various long & short road trips. The ONLY problem to
ever develope on a trip was on I-70 thru Kansas to Snow Mass. A strange
sound from the engine comp. eminated from a broken alt. bracket bouncing on
the fins. Parts were saved, it was welded snugly upon my return home.
Presto! No problem! I must say, I have seen MANY more OTHER cars
sick/dead on the shoulder during many road trips, than DeLoreans. (OK, think
about that a moment) Any other "sicknesses" were ordinary "bugs" common to
ordinary cars & treated back to health at or near home. Pray tell, if
there was an Antiques Mailing List, would the problems shared on Antique
cars frighten away prospective purchasers? I daresay NOT! Is my '38 Buick
more reliable than my DMC? Depends on the day. Can this comparison splash
onto ANY other older vs. newer car? I would wager so. Any individual
ordinary car can be a lemon, but overall, the DMC is as reliable as the
owner desires. (As can be said of ANY antique vehicle) If this prospect is
scarey, get a bike! (Oops, they can get sick, too---walk.) Drive

Firstly id like to thank everyone who responed and
gave great suggestions about why my D would not start!
My D' was out of commission for about 7 weeks while i
made a daily phone call to DMC joe who provided truely
unbelievable customer service in diagnosing the
trouble.
He took me threw the entire fuel system and alittle
into the electrical system. What at first i believed
to be a fuel related problem turned out to be a
no-spark problem. The solution was taking off all the
wires to the impulse coil.. cleaning the contacts and
firmly reattaching them.. Once i did this.. BOOOM!
SHEEE LIVVVVEEess... quite a feeling.. i felt like
doctor frankenstein.
I assume dave stragand will REALLY say this once his
project is completed :)
Just thought id drop this puesdo-good experience to
the list and add some closure to my situation.

After having my D gone over pretty well my DMC joe i
have a few spare parts i replaced for some reason or
another. If anyone is intrested in these lemme know.
left rear lens -yellow has faded otherwise good
condition
-original ashtray -like new
passenger kneepad, goodoverall conditon, no rips -grey
binacle- DESTROYED, this is more or less a peice of
trash. just wondering if anyone wants it before i
throw it away. Basicly its there.. just the top has
MAJOR SUNBURN..its cracked and faded. -was grey,
pretty brown now :)
Hood - I have a late 82 hood.. totally flat no
grooves, no flap. the hood is in excellent conditon,
no dents. There is a minor dime size imperfection
that can be seen at some angles that i can only assume
came from the factory. Its not a ding or stratch.
there is VERY minor x-pattern in the hood which again
can only been seen at certain angles or in the right
temperature... otherwise its not there.
Windsheild. the windshield i own has no cracks but it
does have scratches in the glasss... in certain areas
it looks as if someone took sandpaper to it, there are
3 areas on the glass about 4-5 inches long with
scratches. depending on the response, i might be
parting with most of the other glass sections of the
car, they all seem to have some scratches on them.
If intrested drop me a direct email.. thought i would
mention it here before ebay or the likes.

Hi Dave....
I was having problems with my gages a while back. The needles would
shake when I turned on the power. I later found that I needed to repair
some of the ground wiring. I know that this is a little different from
your problem, but I thought I would offer the advice anyway. You might
want to check to make sure that the tach is getting the correct amount
of current, and that the polarity is correct. I would also check the
fuses to make sure that the current one is in place.

Hello again list,
maybe I didnt explain my problem good enough. The tach never moves.
when you drive the car it stays at 9000 RPMS even if its in idle. when
I put
in the new tach and I received no movement from it at all. what could
this
be? I know it stays at wherever the its at when the car turns off. any
ideas?

the effort into it. Why not consider polishing the stainless to a
mirror finish? I would imagine that your car would be even harder to
keep clean then, but it would be original!

Since I don't have a gas flap, I've never cut my knuckles on one. But
that fiberglass can slice pretty good if you ever pull the jack &
tool kit out!

Bill,
Is your door stuck or your lock stuck? Is the door fully closed or only
partially latched? If your door or latch pins are not adjusted properly this
can jamb the door. If your lock is not working it may be a loose linkage
wire inside the door. You will need to remove the door Trim Pad which is
held in place with fir trees to access the linkage. (Thats the upholstered
part above the arm rest on the door).

Does anyone know where i can find ( in the U.S. ) the Stainless Steel
Delorean letters that go on the rear bumber? I only found one site, that
had them, but
they were out of the U.S.
Also, I notice many people on the DML who sign with their name and Vin #. Any
significance on signing with your Vin #?
