Subject: DMC Houston's sunshade
Hey everyone,
Nobody's posted on this yet, so I thought I'd share my opinion.
As you all know, DMC Houston recently started offering a custom-fitted
external sunshade. Being in Arizona, I jumped on this. I have just two
words to say:
It works.
It fits perfectly and completely darkens out the interior (from the
front, anyway). My car, unfortunately, sits outside at work all day,
and it's been around 105 degrees here this past week. Granted, I do use
the sunshade in conjunction with my car cover, but there is a *very*
noticeable difference between my old foil sunshade and the DMC's new
one. The car isn't oven-like when I get in it anymore.
I cannot comment on security, as like I said I've only used it along
with my cover. If someone *really* wanted to, I suppose they could cut
the elastic hooks and take it, but I'd think those instances would be
extremely rare. It wouldn't fit any other car.
The other thing you'll notice is that people will stare at you with an
even weirder look than usual, given the fact that you've got both doors
open and are fitting a sunshade on the *outside* of your car :-)
To sum up, it's well worth the $25. Even if you don't live in a
boiling-hot climate, the shade will still significantly darken the
interior, thus helping to preserve your seats, dash, and binnacle. This
may sound like PR, but it's just another way our friendly DeLorean parts
suppliers are helping to make our ownership experience better.

Subject: Alignment&Tires
Just a little story for everyone,
I took my D to Sears Automotive today, (which also happens to be where I
work) had the alignment done, and two new front tires installed. I chose to
go with the Goodyear Eagle HP's, Its an H speed rated P195/60R14 tire. I
didnt need rears at this point, but they are available in a P225/60R15 when I
do need them.
The fun came when they put her up on the Alignment rack. The right front toe
was at -2.89 with the left at -0.9. To make a long story short, the tech was
able to get her in specs, and it only cost $44.99. Our alignment equipment
is made by Hunter, which does have the specs for DeLorean loaded on the
current file.
I want to tell everyone how happy I am with my new tires and the quality of
the Alignment that my D received, and Im not just saying that because I am a
manager of the auto center. The only problem that we ran into was that
DeLorean was not listed in our workorder computer system, so if any of you go
to Sears with your D, just tell the service advisor to write up the car under
a different make and model, and have them type "1981 (82 or 83) DeLorean
DMC-12" in comments.
I look foward to seeing some more D's coming into my shop.

Subject: Re: Good DeLorean Experiences
An excellent e-mail MIKE, I subscribe to DeLorean World and to be honest Knudson's comments have been kind of bothering me. I found this group back last August, when I was seriously considering buying a DeLorean. I live in San Diego and I found what I thought to be a nice DeLorean for sale. I did not know very much information about the cars so I was eager to interact and read up on all of the information that I could find. I followed this news group and learned alot of information very quickly from the actual owners of the cars, which by the way is the only authoritative source that I would want to get information from! I didnt want someone who is just presenting a view that the car is the greatest car ever made, that would do a perspective buyer no good! I contacted Don in LA because he had worked on the car since 1984, but what really helped sell me on it was that I could fire off an e-mail and get a half dozen responses for a problem. I dont think any owner, at least the majority, would take anything sent to him without a 'grain of salt' unless it was from someone like a 'DMC JOE'. This list does require the owners to take it upon themselves to 'think' about the problem they are having.
I enjoyed the e-mail a ways back where James showed that the prices, contrary to what Knudson said, had actually been going up. I can see Knudson's point of view, but I guess we would just have a difference in opinion that this list 'hurts' the DeLorean 'marquee'. It would be nice if either James or someone else could expound on the fact that the prices have been going up, but like most debates, Knudson would just argue that the prices might be higher if it were not for this list. Knudson's statement I believe is one that can not be disproven, it would be too hard to gather data to disprove it.
This list is world wide and I would like to challenge anyone to find someone who has chosen not to purchase a DeLorean because of the information presented on this list. I beleive that the solutions to problems that are presented on this list are the authors earnest attempt to help another DeLorean owner and not to hurt him. Sorry for the length, I guess I should e-mail my feelings directly to DeLorean World, which I beleive I will do.
Thank You,
Carson

I fully agree with the spirit of your post, however to be fair I honestly
can't recall reading where the DML has ever attacked the DOA. My point
being the DML only defends itself from time to time from negative articles
or remarks from the DOA and then the group goes about doing what we love the
most, talking about DeLorean's. Please don't infer we the DML have ever
tried to discredit or harass them, we're too busy enjoying our DeLorean's.

Yeah. I have to agree with Collin.
Thanks to the DML I've learnt a lot about the car. If anything, I want one
even more. What the DOA don't realise is that there is over 1,000 people,
enthusiasts or owners, who can share knowledge about the car. That's what
it's all about.
Living in England, I've found that the (general) response to the car is "Ha!
What a piece of s^*t!" This is born out of ignorance, I suppose, and the
only slightly biased (!!!) British press. That said, the car seems to be
getting a better repuation, thanks to the work of the DOC UK and others. The
DOA said that the DML seems to present the car as a fualt-ridden state.
Well, the car is nearing 20 years old, and the ones I have seen are in a
much better state then my uncles' Ferrari 308 or E-Type. Technical problems
are expected, and the place to learn about them is the DML. And besides,
plenty of people write in to say how good the car is and how it was a good
buy.
Thanks,
Matt Clark

Subject: Looking for car cover for outdoor storage...
Hello All,
I'm now on day two of glorious D ownership, and would like to get a
good cover for the car, since I will be parking it outside (in Boston)
. I've looked at the stock Delorean covers, but am not convinced they
are best suited for outdoor storage. I've been looking at the Noah
custom fit car covers by Kimberly-Clark. (see

I would appreciate any suggestions from the group. Thanks in
advance.

Okay, maybe I haven't had had quite that many good experiences with
my DeLorean(s), but it's got to be close...in any case here's one of
my favorites, originally posted in March of 1998 -
Back when I lived in Arizona, a fellow DML'er and I used to go to this car
show in Scottsdale once a month. Invariably we had the only DeLorean's
there, and tended to get a lot of attention. As is the case at most car
shows, the crowd was predominantly male, and the females that were in
attendance generally were with someone already. One night up there a
young blond in a VERY short skirt asks if she can sit in my car - at this
time I was very single and said "Sure!". I closed her in the drivers
seat and chatted with her through
the open window. She asked what it was like to drive, and I asked if she
knew how to drive a five-speed. She replied that she did and I said,
"Let's go for a drive!". I hopped in the passenger seat and gave her a
quick tutorial on the car (seat & mirror adjustments, how to find
reverse, etc.) and off we went. We got a mile or two down the road and
she said, "Show me how's it supposed to be driven." We changed seats and
took off again. After demonstrating the handling characteristics and her
commenting on how much attention the DeLorean garnered no matter where we
were, we went back to the show and exchanged phone numbers. We went out a
couple times after that, but never "clicked".
It doesn't have to be a "trouble-free" road trip to be a "good
DeLorean experience"...you don't even have to 'get the girl'. :)
James

In all fairness, there was a time several years ago in which the DML
contained postings critical of the DOA and the way they operated. At
that time (1996!!), I was the sole moderator and also actually a
member of the DOA board of directors. I knew from firsthand
experiences that the postings contained the truth or in other cases
were obviously stated as opinions, so I approved the postings. Many
longtime DML'ers remember the ensuing legal threats from the DOA
attorney against me and other DML'ers.

I'm pleased that Dave Swingle and the rest of the moderators have
chosen to take the "high road" in many of the recent DOA discussions
that have followed these past few months. They have a very difficult
job, believe it or not, and their only reward is the satisfaction of
a job well done and knowing that they are providing a very valuable
and needed service.

Subject: Rare DeLorean Documentary
I took an hour this morning to view the rare DeLorean documentary that is offered my Daniel McGauley. Those who don't know what I'm talking about can view information on the film via a link on Ken's Car Show website.
I have to say that the video was extremely interesting and I highly recommend it. Mr. McGauley did a very professional job reproducing the old video on VHS. It is very high quality.
Don't expect to get a "start to finish" story as the video was made in 1981, but it contains a great deal of old footage and meetings with DeLorean and his associates. The 50 dollar price tag seems steep, but I think I would have paid double for it, now that I have seen what it contains.
For what my opinion is worth,
Jake

I have a Noah custom fit car cover that I purchased from
http://www.carcover4u.com . When I purchased my Delorean I knew that it was
going to have to live outside so this was one of my first purchases. The fit
is perfect and it does a great job protecting the car of all weather
conditions.

Subject: Suspension modernising
Dear list,
I said a couple of weeks ago that I had taken "Delores" my (RHD vin 5638) in
to
be the test bed for the suspension up-grading being organised by Steve Wynne
and his British colleague, Paul Windsor at Wingray Autos in Liverpool,
England....Well I got my modified car back on Friday and I could not believe
the difference they have achieved! They have somehow managed to achieve the
impossible..the front of the car seems to iron out the bumps in the road,
without all the old "bone shattering jarring", yet the thing seems to go
around bends as if its on rails! Don't get me wrong I was happy enough to
accept the way it drove before ( just the same as my other D's) after all it
is a 20 year old design...but the improvements make it very similar to
driving a modern (European) car. It feels less tail happy when pushed near
the limit...also thanks to lowering the front an inch or so ( to the
origanal Lotus designed ride height), I am no longer looking AT the bonnet,
but over it. Under hard acceleration, in the past it always reminded me of a
plane, trying unsuccessfully to take off!
I will be very interested to see what the rest of you make of the upgrade
kit when it offered for sale.
The people doing the work are both old "pre-production" DeLorean/ Lotus
engineers, with some 50,000 test miles, on D's already under their belts,
who have gone on to run a very successful engineering firm doing only
suspension development work.
I had a very interesting tour of their gas strut / shock adsorbed
manufacturing facility, together with a look at all the computer generated
graphs etc. used in this project. I think this new "spring and damper" set
up will be a real winner...depending on price of course.
Anyone want to buy some old springs?

Subject: Oil Leak
I've seen a few postings in the past dealing with oil leaks on the
engine block, on the left side of the car. And the fix has been to
replace either the oil pressure switch, or the seal for it. Just to
let everyone know, there is one other place to check. Behind the
tensioning bracket for the A/C belt, the is a small cover plate(#
102194) that's mounted in place by the 2 bolts that hold the A/C
bracket. Between the cover plate & the block there's an "O" ring
(# 102820). If the "O" ring was not properly inserted when the cover
plate was mounted, it can create a leak that will run down the block
and over the pressure switch. This was the case on our car and the
cause of the oil leak. Instant gasket will do a great job of sealing,
and it helps to hold the cover in place while you re-
mount everything (acctually pretty easy to do). This might be
something that you'll want to check next time you change belts.

Go to www.carcoon.com They have an exterior model to protect your car
from the elements. Or you could always call up DMC Houston to order
one since they are the distributor. I've been looking at one of thier
clear indoor models to dry out my D in the winter time, but I don't
know how long it takes for the bubble to inflate.
