Brad,
Yes, it certainly sounds like its a dead alternator but if your battery is
good you should be able to make it run with a jump start. Two other things
you might check is the battery to chassis ground. This could be either a
loose connection or a defective cable. If that checks out you may have a
bad cell in your battery. Either substitute the current battery with
another or bring you battery to a service facility and ask them to "load
test" it.

Massimo,
Pull the interior door handle up and look down past the handle and into the
door, you will see either a 10mm bolt or a Phillips head screw, remove the
screw. Now pull out the blank switch cover (similar to driver door where
the mirror switch is) look down through that hole and you will see another
10mm bolt or Phillips head screw, remove and the lower panel will detach
from the door. As a side note you will probably find a broken cable tube
bracket (white plastic). If this is the case it is not repairable, DeLorean
part suppliers have improved updated replacements.
The seats are easily removed be removing the four 13mm bolts that hold the
seat track assembly, they are easily accessed from under the car. You will
also need to slide each seat forward to help clear the track from the seat
belt anchor.

Poorly. I have only received about half a dozen responses. :(
Therefore, treat this as a second call for information. If you want to
contribute to the insurance database (and believe me, you want to :) )
then please, fill in the blanks and email your answer to me at
fluffy@xxxxxxxxxxxx I hope to have at least one response on file from
every state, except perhaps Alaska. Once I get enough responses to create
meaningful statistics, "Stainless Steel Hand Espey" has offered to host
the information on the web site. But I think it would look silly with
only five entries.
Therefore, if you have a DMC, and you have it insured, and your insurance
is for something other than storage only, please fill out the following
questionnaire (Version 1.1) and return it to me. You'll make everyone
happy if you supply as much as possible of the information on the form.
Thanks. :)

What model D you have and whether you have put any insurance-eating
modifications (turbo, nitrous, super-sound, flux capacitor) into it. If
so, how much of an effect did this have on your quote, if you know. One
other question: Does lowering the front on the D raise the insurance
rates? (preliminary evidence says no...)
Age, sex, family/marriage status and homeowner status
Where you live. In particular what state, but also whether you live in
the city or in a rural area, and if so, which city.
What your driving record is like. Anyone that wants to would make me
happy if they told me specifically how many tickets and accidents, if any,
you have.
What other vehicles you own, if any, and which one is your "primary"
driver.
What flavor of insurance you have. Is your D insured for standard, full
coverage? Do you have mileage or usage restrictions?
What sort of car your insurance company claims you have. It's probably
not an SUV or a pickup, but did they insist on calling it a "sports car"
or did you convince them that it's a coupe, classic, or some generic
category?
If you considered other vehicles in the same class as the D, what did the
insurance companies tell you they would cost?
Who it is that you have actally convinced to insure your car.
And of course, how much all this costs you, per vehicle.
Thanks for your help!

Sound like a lobar of love.
I would first find out if there is anyone in your area skilled in
repairing stainless steel, which requires using heat and tools combined to
remove dents and imperfections.
The second thing that I would do is make a list of all of the things that
you see and if your not mechanically skilled bring along a mechanic and
add his notes to the list.
The third thing that I would do is inquire through DMC Houston, PJ Grady
and the other specialist as the cost for the parts required and add both
your labor and the labor of the mechanic to create a rough estimate to
repair and restore. After you have that, then go sit down with the owner
and work on the dollars/pounds. I would attempt to keep your total
investment in the $13,000.00 to $17,000.00 range so that it is a
"marketable" car, if you ever need to sell it in the general market.
I hope eveyone else agrees. If not, then remember that it is only one
opinion.

Subject: DML: Twin Turbo HP?
Hi,
Well, I thought I might put an end to the HP questions. No luck.
I ordered a GTech Pro. It was discussed on the list a couple of weeks
ago. Nice little unit that has a few design flaws. Took the car out
to the local sand, gravel and concrete plant and weighed it, with me
and gas and what ever. Took it out and made two runs, the second
didn't count because the unit shut down when the shift contacted the
cigarette lighter plug in. Then I made a third. The best reading was
162hp. ???
Came back home, head scratch, get out instruction book again and read
it cover to cover. Fine print on last page. "If you have a turbo car
the difference from Dyno and G-Tech Pro will be greater because turbo
cars develop maximum horsepower in higher gears (more time to build
up the boost) but in higher gears there is also more aerodynamic
drag." I don't know about you other guys that have turbos but mine
will build max boost in any gear. Don't think these people thought
out their disclaimer very well.
Packed it up and sent it back.

As mentioned earlier, I got a line on a fellow who works with our engine;

work on these engines to increase their performance. He has done head and
crankshaft swaps to set up the engine as an "even fire", changed the

I think the biggest advantage of the rear-engine might be the ease with
which jumper cables can be attached. For those of us that manage to drain
our batteries regularly even with the benefit of good electrical systems,
it's probably critical. :}
BTW, does the D have those neat little dinger sounds when you leave the
lights on, keys in the ignition, etc.? I really need those. :}
It sounds to me like you might have developed a short circuit somewhere -
maybe in your ignition system. With the battery fully charged (and with
the assistance of a jump, certainly) you should be able to at least start
the car; if your alternator is bad, your battery will run down again, but
you shouldn't experience sputtering on a full battery whether your
alternator is working or not.

I tried it and gained a noticable increase in the already great degree of

That's not really all that great, but it's not outside the realm of
possibilities. Of course, you're also measuring on a Gtech stick-on
meter...
The best measurement of HP is done on a dyno, whether it is an engine dyno
or a wheel dyno doesn't matter, but will determine engine HP vs. "street
HP" (which is lower because of transmission drag, air resistance, tire
friction, etc).
The G-Tech (which is really just an accelerometer) has to "guess" at your
HP by measuring at your acceleration. This is a misfortune, because HP
isn't really what creates acceleration in the 0-60 bracket - it's torque,
and although the two are related, there's no precise, direct correlation.
A lot of factors go into an accelerometer-style measurement that have
absolutely nothing to do with engine performance at all, like the
transmission, tires, and driver. :} HP, really, is more useful for things
like passing, going uphill, towing trailers (not in the D of course) and
other more constant efforts, rather than the sharp acceleration of 0-60.

Obviously the max boost has nothing to do with what gear you're in, but it
does have to do with engine RPM. From 0-60, you don't really use the
turbo the whole time, and when you are using it, as often as not you're at
relatively low RPM. Turbos, of course, are at their best above 2000 RPM.
So yes, their gadget will be more inaccurate on a turbo car, but not for
those reasons :)

Subject: DML: DMC for Sale ***Warning***
Just a small consumer notice...
The other day I was told by one of my co-workers that there was a
DeLorean for
sale in South Florida and since I've only had my car for over a month so
I was
curious as to other offers that were out there that I was not even aware
of.
For any of you out there in Miami this DeLorean for sale is on US1 and
178th
Street. The basics: It's a September 81 VIN: 38??, Grey Interior,
Automatic,
27K miles, Original NCT(s). I asked to see the car in detail and it was
not
impressed by the condition of the car. Here is a run down of what I
found:
EXTERIOR:
The exterior is in an almost trashed condition. The hood has a very
present
"X" creace that was previously discussed and can be felt not just seen.
The
rear quarter panels are damaged up where they meet the "T" panel but
probably
can be repaired. The "T" panel needs to be replaced and it seems that the
louver being opend improperly caused this damage because it was located
right
by the hinges. The front and rear facia are in OK condition but need to
be
repainted. The windsheild is cracked in three places, the rear window is
also
cracked. The louver is also broken where it meets the driver side strut.
The
car is also extreemly dirty and after about a minute or so of rubbing
away at
it I couldn not remove the stains.
INTERIOR
To put it simply this car was baked "extra crispy" in the Florida sun. It
really looks like it's been out ther for 17 years. Every interior surface
is
cracked or broken except for the trim surrounding the center console. The
shifter handle is also broken. The original seats were removed and
replaced
with electronic seats. About the only good thing in the interior were the
original DMC floor mats and the headliners, apart from that the car is a
total
mess.
MECHANICS
I can't speak for the mechanical aspects of the car but if the Interior
and
Exterior are any guide it's probably not good since this does not look
like a
car that was cared for. I don't think they would have allowed an in depth
inspection for a "just looking" person.
The asking price for the car was a whopping $20,000 and I beleive it was
for
sale on consignment so it didn't belong to the used car dealership. If I
had
to grade this car it would get a D. I'm no expert but for $20,000 thats
just
plain out of hand and a fair price would probably be $4000 - $6000. I
bought
my D in B+ condition for several thousand less. There are also several
more
D's for sale in the Miami area in used car dealerships in similar
condition
but not so irrationally priced.

called
Hagerty Classic Insurance. We went with them after doing some rather
extensive research. I was able to get AGREED VALUE insurance, with all
the
bells and whistles for only $316.00 a year. The best part is that there
is NO
mileage limitations, and the vehicle CAN be left unattended. There is,
however, a form to be filled out, which assures them that this is a
classic
vehicle that will not be used for everyday use. You have to submit
photos,
and info on your regular insurance, on your everyday cars. IMPORTANT: I
see
alot of you are claiming to have insurance like STATE FARM, and you might
want
to check this out, but you probably do not have Fire/Theft or body damage
coverage, even though you think you do. I checked with all the Big
Companies,
and no one is covering these things, at least in the state of Tennessee.
If
you dont have a sharp agent, they will not notice the SMALL PRINT that the
underwriters have in place. PLEASE BE CAREFUL. Hagerty's Classic
Insurance
can be reached at 1-800-922-4050.

On Saturday October 31st, 1998 there will be the annual "Hooters" Car

Cerebral Palsy.
There will be a nominal registration fee and the profits will go to
charity.
I spoke with the Manager at Hooters yesterday and there is a good chance
that tee shirts will be given to all participants.
More details will follow as they become available.
I would like to extend an invitation to all DeLorean owners that would
wish to attend. You can contact me directly (scottmueller@xxxxxxxxx)
and I will put you on an update email list.
So far, Steve Wynne of DeLorean Motor Company has said that he can
schedule a trip into Mobile to conduct an informal Tech Session ( 12 car
attendance minimum ) which will be based on our specific questions. If
time permits, Steve will conduct inspections of our cars.
I will be hosting a BBQ at my home for the owners and there
guests/companions after the show. You will have to bring your own beer
though.
If you wish to come down Friday night and spend Saturday night in
Mobile, let me know and I will put together a list of Motel/Hotels that
you can contact for rooms. The weather in Mobile towards the end of
October is supposed to be really nice.
Duke Bladorn is attempting to make arrangements with the local track to
allow us to take a couple of laps. Also, Duke is attempting to arrange
for a special guest speaker.
This DeLorean Owners gathering will be very informal, no fees, with the
exception of the car show.

is exactly the same. My dash, center console, doors and seats are black.
The headliner, carpeting, and rear deck are Grey. I also agree, that
after
years of looking at different D's, the contrast with the Black and Grey is
nice. (This is a personal opinion everyone- so no need to start a thread
off this!). Dick also mentioned that about 200 cars were produced this
way.
Was that produced identical to ours or with other mixed color schemes?

Just got a nice note from Bob Benyon, a longtime DML'er who recently sold

DMC-News classifieds are free, Bob very generously sent a nice check to

Joe, My reference to 200 amps was from someone elses previous post. I
was questioning the reliability of a 200 amp Duciellier altenator. I do
not believe that 200 amps is possible for any length of time. The alt
would be rated for 100 amps continuous duty with a peak of 115 amps.
I hope that I have cleared this up.

Subject: DML: John De Lorean article
This is the entire article:
DeLorean's NJ estate to be auctioned off Oct.6
A state judge has cleared the way for an Oct. 6 sale of former automaker
John
Delorean's Bedminster estate.
The 434-acre estate will be auctioned off by the Somerset County Sheriff's
Office to settle a $9 million debt owed to Merrill Lynch Credit Corp.
Another
of Delorean's creditors, Michigan attorney Mayor Morganroth, recently
challenged the settlement agreement between DeLorean and Merrill Lynch.
Morganroth won a $ 7 million judgment against DeLorean. Last month he
filed
papers in Superior Court in Somerville challenging the Merrill Lynch
claim of
$76,000 for attorney and expert fees in the company's foreclosure case
against
Delorean.
Dave Roberts, DeLorean's attorney, said Assignment Judge Wilfred P. Diana
approved most of the fees in a written decision last week.
Roberts said Oct 6 was set as the date for the sale, following the
decision.
Morganroth is second in line to collect on any funds generated by the
sale.
He said DeLorean promised in the settlement agreement with Merrill Lynch
not
to exercise his right to delay the sale. DeLorean and the company reached
a
settlement in May for the 1990 loans DeLorean received.
The agreement allows for all but the former automaker's home and several
small
parcels of land to be sold. The house and the property eill go to his
children, Zachary and Kathryn.
Make of it as you will

For those of you who can't read german Alta Vista provides a free

It works kind of strange but it does work. Keep in mind though, much
text on a

Subject: DML: Just a few questions
Hello everyone,
I have a few questions:
1. Both of the rear speakers have decided that they have had enough and
died. I (and a local stereo installer) are a little concerned about
un-adhering the "rear quarter trim panel from the door filler panel -
with a heat gun as the technical manual described due to the age of the
car. Has anyone dealt with removing and reapplying this panel?
2. Neither I nor the previous owner could figure out how the battery
strap actually worked - sounds kind of silly, huh? Well, can anyone
give any suggestions on how to get the strap to clamp properly?
3. Last week, my front courtesy light (in the headliner) burned out. I
went to the automotive supply store and found the only light that they
had that was the correct size - physically and electrically - with one
exception. The original was 7 Watts and the new one was 5 Watts.
Needless to say the light is much, much dimmer. In fact, it doesn't
produce enough light to be of any effect.
4. The rear tires are the original ones (the car has only 24.5k miles)
and still has a bit of tread left. The fronts were replaced by the
previous
owner with Pirelli P6's. I have had the wheels rebalanced and aligned and
have a mild vibration problem that was improved, but still exists.
Because
of the age of the rear tires (the car is an '81), I am a little concerned
that they
may be what is causing the vibration. Any ideas about that?
5. Because of the possibility of replacing the tires in the near future,
I
have begun to look for a new set of tires. I am in the tire industry -
kind-of (I
design equipment used to manufacture tires - I am not involved with the
production of tires directly), and have looked through the web sights for
Dunlop, Cooper, Firestone/Bridgestone, Goodyear, Kelly/Springfield, and
Pirelli in their performance section only and have found bizzare results.
It
seems that there are many tires available for the front (195/60R14), but
very
little available for the rear (235/60R15). And to beat it all, when I did
find
a brand and model for both, the front would come with black lettering
while
the rear would come with white lettering. My question is: does anyone
have
any suggestions for a brand and model tire set for the car for the
original
sizes
only?
Thank you all!!!

Here in England we don't have any DeLorean service facilities (as you can
guess). What we do have is a dedicated bunch of fans skilled in all
different
areas, much like the mailing list, but on a far smaller scale. This
includes a
couple of chaps who have now perfected the repair of stainless body
panels.
Dave Howarth told me that a chap over here has just had both rear quarter
panels repaired and looking indistinguishable from "new" ones for 150
pounds
the pair. That's roughly 250 bucks.
I know the doors are a different matter, but even having to buy new ones,
the
cost will still be less than the value when all fixed.
Best Wishes,
Martin
