Delorean Mailing List:
The Mid-State Delorean Club of Central and Southern Illinois went to the
First Annual "My Classic Car" Autofest that was held in Evansville,
Indiana
last fall. A group of eight Delorean participated in the car show. There
were film crews interviewing the participates along with commercial break
footage for upcoming episodes of "My Classic Car with Dennis Gage" A
member of our group was interviewed with his Delorean along with a
commerical break that was filmed of the eight Delorean and owners. I'm
not
sure how much footage will be used in the episode. I can honestly say we
took the show as we drove into the show area. It was indeed a beautiful
sight.
If you are interested in seeing the episoded. It will first air on
Saturday, February 7, 1998 on TNN at 3:30 p.m. Eastern Time and on Sunday,
February 8, 1998 at 2:30 p.m. Eastern Time. Check you local listings for
times.

While doing some cleaning in the basement I found an interesting new De
Lorean toy. It's a miniature "Back to the Future" DMC time machine from
a
McDonalds happy meal in 1991! For some reason they got extra cheap and
made the base of it blue, but the rest is gray. Doc Brown is quite large
and decked out in orange. He's hanging out of the side through the
window
(which is quite amazing considering that this model does have the small
windows outlined)...At any rate, it will be a nice addition to my small
DMC
collection (Special thanks to whoever bought the Happy Meal).

Stephen Clark (from the BTTF club) probably knows more, but I think there
were two versions of this toy, one that made sparks when you pushed it
and one that didn't. I always thought that this one was recalled, and the
one that replaced it did not emit any sparks.

A special thanks to James for the pre-productions photos. Looking at them
and
then looking up prototypes in Stainless Steel Illusion, I believe that
the car
is a prototype somewhere after prototype #2. On page 53 of SSI it shows
the
wooden orginal, prototype #1 and #2. Both #1 and #2 have the side lights
like
your photos .However they all have the side window "notched downward",
not the
continuous line off fender top. ( See page 77, SSI). I agree on the tan
inter,
this was the protoype used in the famous Ortega Canyon sales film. It too
had
the "notched side window". After seeing the photos I'm glad that Delorean
did
do some tweeking to the design. Again thanks for the photos and the work
that
it takes to make the web site and the news letter continue to be there
for
ALL of us!

I just read an article about the only factory-made twin turbo De Lorean
ever made. I found it at www.usadmc.com I never knew this existed at
all! Does anybody have any info on this? I would be interested to know
what drive train and motor it used(are they the same as the production
model?) The web page also claimed it's 0-60 was under 6 sec! Please, if

A brief introduction, since this is my first contribution. I'm Bill
Swilley, current and original owner of #4730. This fine vehicle has
served me well over the years and was a daily driver for the first 12
years of its existence. I've been living and working in Saudi Arabia
since '93 and only get to visit my pride and joy two or three times a
year. While I'm away, it resides at DMC with Stephen Wynn, who keeps it
exercised once in awhile for me and always has it cleaned up and ready
to go for me when I hit town. It's on its second engine, and Stephen
has done a few minor "tricks" to it, so that it runs considerable better
than stock, but nothing so radical as to sacrifice drivability.
One item of possible interest: Noted in the January '98 issue of the
DuPont Registry, #1235 for sale. Twin turbo, lowered, front dam, ground
effects skirts, rear wing, and wide side stripe: $27,500.
I've enjoyed reading all of your comments on the cars and your efforts
to resolve problems for each other. What a great resource! I will try
to put in my two cents' worth from time to time now that I have a fairly
decent connection. This place (Saudi) is a bit behind the times, to say
the least.

I just recieved an A&E Crime & Justice report video tape which was titled
"STING" In it there is the DeLorean sting operation. It was not worth
the
money, but I did see a few clips of cars being manufactured in the Ireland
plant. It was pretty neet to finally understand what happened.

Dear DML,
It has been a long time since I have written. My car has been out of
commission ever since Thanx Giving. I brought it to my shop on November
28th. The shop didn't touch my car for about 3 weeks. Then he started,
slowly... Finally he told me he is going to pull the engine. All I
needed
done was the water pump, all the o rings and all new hoses, a new clutch
and
both cylinders with dot5 put it, exhaust seals and some studs. Well
finally
I got him to sign some type of release date. March 6th is the day. I am
also having all my engine seals done too. Oil pan, head cover (left and
right) cams are going to be adjusted. He was probing around in my engine
with a magnet and found some screws? I know I dropped one in, that is
why I
had it towed in to the shop... I dropped one in because all the threads
around the pulley setup were all stripped.. The screw slipped and bam!!!
It
was in that cam cover hole. That was a very expensive mistake... But I
guess it turned out to be a blessing cuz when he went in to get it out
with
his magnet tools he pulled out a screw, a different screw!!! He called
specialty auto and talk to some volvo guy. The volvo guy say that
sometimes
in volvo engines small screws break off possibly from the cam-timing chain
sprockets... Since the engine is going to be out do any of you have any
suggestions on what I should have done? The car has 65K miles on it. I
was
thinking about the catalytic converter... I am sure it doesn't work
anymore... Should I have it hollowed? or put a new one on? Will I pass
emissions with the hollowed one? Thank you for your help.

Delorean World Vol5#5 has an extensive article on the factory turbo. It
was
the Renault engine lower end and camshafts -- but that was about it. The
twin turbos and twin intercoolers produced 0-60 acceleration of 5.8
seconds. The option was to offered for $7500.00! The bankruptcy occurred
before any production models could be sold which is of course too bad as
it
probably would have been the salvation of the car and company.

engine block. OK so I tried a couple of drills and extractors to no
avail.
So I decided to completely drill out the broken bolt and tap some new
threads. This brings me to the big problem. I drilled to far and drilled
into a coolant channel in the block. Ooohhhh MMaann!!! This is my
question. I have a clean hole and new threads, would teflon tape be a
good
seal or should I use something else to seal this new bolt or am I just
plain screwed??? Any advice would be of great help. Thanks Jim

Dear DML,
We have been hearing a lot of negative things about DeLorean Service
from certain places, I don't think I have to name the place... Well I
just
wanted to let you know my positive experience. I know DeLoreans have
their
short comings, which makes it so important to have good service and
available parts. I have owned my DeLorean for a few months less than a
year. So far I have replaced everything needed, and wanted from speedo
parts to main engine parts. Rob Grady's shop has been so helpful. When I
speak to Rob, Debbie, or anybody who picks up the phone, I feel like they
care. Rob especially, he tries to help with everything, he answers all
the
questions one might have, (god knows I ask tons of questions) He always
tries to save you money in the long run by suggesting good used or
refurbished parts, and of course the new parts. He also does a great job
of getting parts made up if the originals have been exhausted. DeLorean
Houston is also very good. I have never had problems. They are so
helpful.
Without these people having a DeLorean would have turned out to be a
nightmare.
Right now... My car has been in the shop for... 6 weeks now. The guy
is going to pull the engine... he is going to charge me $3000+ I told
Rob... he said he would do it for around $2000 if not less. He is
honest,
he tells it like it is. If things need replacing I do it. I am glad I
know
cars, cuz if you don't really know engines, trans, brakes and other
things,
not just of DeLorean but other cars foreign and domestic.. You would feel
like you are being ripped off. It is that sticker shock thing... when
you
need some parts and the total comes out to $1000... you kinda feel like,
just cuz it is DeLorean you are being charged outrageous amounts... I
have
played with all sorts of cars so far, and found that sometimes normal new
car parts are way more expensive than our DeLorean parts. I stopped
trying
to find cross referenced parts... I found it to be a pain in the but to go
the round about way... usually you don't save that much money, if you do
it
is a few dollars... maybe more... but sometimes it is worth the little
extra to have a part proven to work in the DeLorean.. You don't waste any
time hunting for spark plug wires or oil filters... That is my point of
view at least..
I just wanted to let people know that I have had and will continue to
have great experiences with Rob's shop and DMC Houston... I am very happy
that these shops exist... It makes owning a DeLorean so much more fun and
maybe closer to being a practical car.. :-)

Over the last several months there has been many comments regarding
DeLorean
models. For the last few years the Twin City area, here in Minnesota, has
produced an automotive restoration clinic which has been of the scale that
it required the facilities of the Minneapolis Convention Center. Among the
participating vendors have been folks from the Franklin Mint. A few years
back they did a Cadillac Brougham that had a brushed stainless steel roof.
It looked great and I asked if they would ever do a DeLorean. I was told
that with the experience of doing the Cadillac roof a DeLorean would
probably look very nice, but the cost of producing a car at the Franklin
Mint was in excess of $300,000 which means they would have to sell a lot
of
models to make any money. When one looks at some of their more recent
offerings, it would seem the DeLorean would be of more interest ( read
sales) than what they are now advertising in automotive publications. One
thing they would need in order to produce a DeLorean model is access to a
real DeLorean in their Philadelphia studio to get the proper dimensions.
Many recent E mailings in this newsletter have encouraged us to push the
History Channel to pursue the DeLorean story for the Automobile segment of
their offerings. I suggest a campaign of encouragement to the Franklin
Mint
to do a DeLorean if we really want a well done model of our favorite car.

I'm assuming your referring to the four bolts holding the intake manifold
in-place. I had one bolt that stripped when I removed mine. I was pretty
nervous when I drilled out the hole in the cylinder head to install a
heli-coil thread insert. I'd put the heli-coil insert in the hole and use
a
pipe dope on the threads of the bolt. The factory didn't use never-seize
on
any engine fasteners and the combination of steel bolts with aluminum
parts
like cylinder heads can be a problem after all these years.

Vick,
The "VIN" is the Vehicle Identification Number and is located on the
driver's side, on the top of the dash, inside the windshield so that it
may be read from outside the car. It's located in the same place on all
except the oldest cars.
It't a long number containing both letters and numbers and is coded to
include nation of origin, manufacturer, make and type, series/model,
engine, year, manufacturing plant location and plant sequence number.
It's also listed on your title and your insurance policy.

to health: "Yes, that's exactly what the tape's for - just remember to
