Subject: Heads up on oil pressure sender cross parts reference

I had a fun experience this week trying to find an oil pressure 
sender replacement locally.  On the cross-parts reference, a Volvo 
part is listed.  So I called a Volvo dealership and asked them to 
send me the part, well, they said it was replaced with a newer part 
and could overnight it to me for free, so I purchased it for about 
$30.  It wasn't even close.  Wrong size threads, and had a spring 
loaded piston on it.  So, I would like to warn everyone else that the 
part number in the cross reference list is wrong and won't thread 
into your block.  

I called up about 4 Volvo dealerships here in Central PA asking for 
help, and when I mentioned it was for a PRV-6, the answer was 
either "that engine was used in boats," or "i have no idea."  I would 
have thought Volvo dealership mechanics would have known a thing or 
two about the engine???  This was kind of scary, considering I may 
need to call one of these places in the future, should my D ever need 
some serious engine work.  I'll deal with that when it comes I 
guess.  

Anyway, I looked back in the backissues and found where Marty Maier 
specified the Autozone part, Wells PS-136.  I was able to cross 
reference this part at NAPA and the price was around $27 with tax.  
It looks almost exactly like the original, with the exception that 
there is a spade connector at the top instead of a bolt and nut.

P.S.  Does anyone have any good tips for restoring the black plastic 
valences?  Mine are a little scratched up.

My angle drive gears are metal. Pot metal housing has a quaint
sounding British firm cast into it ("Something" & Sons, England? Can't
remember exactly and it's too cold right now to go outside and look).
Spindle cable is definitely wound AGAINST predominant left wheel
rotation. Is this unit original to my car?

My housing is labeled "Smith Motor Accessories Ltd, England" Part
#862401/11.

Is this an original unit or a replacement? Because the spindle cable
is wound AGAINST left wheel rotation, I suspect it was intended for a
right hand drive vehicle (which would rotate WITH the windings). My
lubrication screw is also upside down on the left wheel, but would be
right side up on the other side (are all lubrication screws oriented
this way?).

I had a similar problem after changing the tranny fluid.  With the 
car running, in park and warmed up check your fluid level.  Most 
likely it is just low on fluid.

I received my DW mag a few days ago and was very impressed with the quality,
as it has embossed covers and high gloss pages and great photo quality.
The CD enclosed was a surprise and fine for what it was........but don't
blink your eyes or you will miss the content.  Two and a half minutes.   It
was interesting to stop it though and look at the high detail of just about
ANY component of the D.    After the last few issues I had dropped my
subscription...I was not intersted in a travel magazine for that much money.
I think the competition has done its job.     We will see.

I've done some copyright research too. According to the DMC bankruptcy 
trustee, whom I spoke to personally, ANY valid copyrights formerly owned by DMC are 
now the legal property of John Z. DeLorean, as part of the settlement.  That 
includes the DMC logo and even the manuals. Buying the repair parts does not 
convey ownership of the copyrights. If anyone would like to dispute that, email 
me a copy of your Certificate of Transfer and I'll publically acknowledge my 
mistake on the DML.

As Marc Levy said/implied, the threat/fear of legal action is often more
effective than actual litigation, and even the retainer for a lawyer could
be higher than the licensing fee.  The following doesn't refute or confirm
what Marc said.  It's just more info.

In general, the owner of a legally strong (distinctive and unique) trademark
or service mark can keep others from using it (or using something so similar
that its use would create the likelihood of customer confusion).

If you sold a picture of a DeLorean, how likely would it be that the buyer
would think you were DMCH?

If you sold a "DeLorean Ring" with a DMC logo, could the buyer be
confused?????
	
You get into darker and darker grey areas if you sell a "DMC Ring" an auto
part with the DMC Logo, or use a DMC Logo on marketing or packaging.

On one hand, the pre-existence of the (similar) DMC Logo dilutes any claim
DMCH might have about potential confusion.

On the other hand, if DMCH doesn't actively and uniformly attempt to defend
the logo, they can lose all rights to it. If they hadn't registered it,
someone else could have, and even though DMCH couldn't have been forced to
stop using it, the new registrant could easily have diluted the logo.

Definitions:
A trademark is any word, phrase, design, slogan or symbol (including
nonfunctional unique packaging) that serves to identify a specific product
brand. Examples: Xerox photocopiers, Kodak film and cameras, Exxon gasoline
and automotive products, Nike sport shoes, Apple Computer's rainbow apple
with a bite missing; the red Coca Cola logo.
 
A service mark is any word, phrase, design or symbol that identifies a
specific brand of service. Examples: McDonald's fast food service, Kinko's
photocopying service, ACLU legal service, Blockbusters video rental service,
the UPS logo (postage delivery service) the U.S. Postal Service's eagle in
profile (postage delivery service); CBS's stylized eye in a circle
(television network service), the Olympic Games' multicolored interlocking
circles (international sporting event).

Marc, that was a great posting and you did not look like a Moron.  I
would like to ad that many vendors have prior use to the filing of DMCH.
Which means that they were using the logo prior to DMCH obtaining the
trademark.  After that last group of postings about this subject I asked
my attorney.  He stated that the users of the logo prior to the filing
have nothing to worry about except the fact that they may or may not
have to go to court.  The not so wonderful thing about these United
States is that anyone can sue anyone.....

I have no specific beef with DMC, my goal here is to
share what I have learned about the DMC trademark from
minimal research on the Internet with list members. 
Anyone, including DMCH, is welcome to supply me (or
the list) with information which contradicts what I
have found.

It has been asked what my personal involvement with
this issue is, so I state here that I have no personal
interest in using the logos, nor do I represent anyone
else who does.  At no point have I yet had the need to
use either of these logos for any reason.  My purpose
again is to have the truth made public (even if my
research results are incorrect).  My risk of looking
like a moron (something I do well, and often) is my
own if I am incorrect.

Back to the issue at hand.  James may be a friendly
guy (to you), but he has yet to address the
information I have provided to the list a number of
times..  that is, the ORIGINAL "DMC" logo trademark is
listed as "Dead" in the official database
(http://www.uspto.gov/).  The modified logo that is
owned by DMCH is NOT the logo that anyone else would
want to use.  I am not a lawyer, but silence on this
matter could be considered failure to enforce their
rights (which I am told cannot be selectively
enforced)

By claiming that a number of big-name companies have
made agreements with DMCH to use the logo just means
that either those companies did not know what they
were buying, or felt the fee DMCH demanded was less
costly than possible legal action.  I wonder if this
is why the toys I saw at Universal Florida last week
did not have the DMC logo?  What a shame, that all of
the kids (and adults) buying those toys are not
exposed to the logo.  Lets face it, a good number
(maybe even majority) or DeLorean owners were fist
exposed to the car by BTTF.

Every once in a while, I get a good idea.. And when I
discuss it with anyone I know, they always say "Hey,
get a patent!".  I always laugh, getting a patent on
anything is a matter of filling out some papers and
paying a fee.  It means nothing until it has been
challenged, and successfully held up in court.  THAT
can cost LOTS of money, and aggravation.  Same goes
for Copyright and Trademarks.

It is likely that there is no product anyone can make
using the DMC logo that would be worth the expense and
effort to defend in court.  Be it a part, jewelry, or
a tee shirt.  Maybe some Lawyer type on the list will
do it themselves just for the principal of it.

FWIW, I think copyrights and trademarks are VERY
important.  Many companies spend LOTS of money to
build a reputation behind their logos.  Frankly, this
is not the case with DMCH.  They just happen to have
the name "DeLorean Motor Company", they just happen to
be the owner of the majority of leftover physical
assets from the REAL DMC, and they just happen to have
a copyright registered on a similar logo..  None of
this makes them the company that built our cars in the
80's....  And no one from DMCH has supplied any
information contrary to this.

It was pointed out to me on the DMCForum by John D
that I have made a mistake.

On the front of our cars is a Logo, This is the logo I
have been talking about because I find no registration
by DMCH for it. (See it here

However, The Logo which DMCH has registered WAS used
by DMC back in the 80's (As John D pointed out) on a
number of public advertisements and such, however I
cannot find any registration for this logo that shows
it as a official trademark of DMC.  (See the logo

What does this mean?

According to the lawyer I spoke with, it means that
DMCH would probably loose a challenge on EITHER logo
because it's use predates the DMCH registration. 
Someone who owns a DeLorean related business that
pre-dates the DMCH registration (in 2001) would have a
excellent chance of beating this in court.

If anyone plans on doing this, I strongly suggest you
contact your own lawyer.  Find someone who is familiar
with patent/trademark law.

The issue of the trademarks and DMCs position with regard to them 
obviously carries a lot of interest with the list. With no one other 
than DMC speaking on behalf of DMC, the ongoing speculation on the 
list about the DMC position will likely continue to be just that. I 
would suggest that anyone seeking legal advice do so from their own 
lawyer and not base action on the speculation on this list. I also 
suggest that those that really want to have DMC address their 
requests make such requests to DMC.

I expect further posts on this thread to focus on new facts and 
discoveries rather than more speculation.

So - how much time and driving did you spend to save the $15-20 over 
a DMC vendor? The cross ref thing is fine when you are stuck on the 
side of the road, and there are a some parts where you can really 
save some money, but in my book $15, even on a $30 part isn't one of 
them (unless you have way more time than money).

*IF* the hole in my block is original, the thread pattern is 1/8" BSPT
(British), not 1/8" NPT (American). They look deceptively similar, but
BSPT is 28 TPI while NPT is 27. Adapters are available between the two
systems, and between different pipe sizes:

The other thing you need to watch for is calibration. Most dometic oil
pressure senders are calibrated to drive 100 PSI gauges, not 80 PSI.

The DeLorean used gauges made by General Motors AC Delco division. I have no idea who made the gauges Volvo used for the B28F series cars but there is a real
possibility the calibration is different in the Volvo sender because of the
difference in those gauges. I'm guessing that DeLorean used a sender that
Volvo or Renault used and that's why Delorean oil pressure gauges always
jump to the top of the scale. The sender Marty Maier recommends in the Mid
States Club web sight is the proper match to the AC oil pressure gauge.

Hello,
When asking the Volvo dealers for parts, Don'T mention that its for a 
Delorean or PRV-6.  Tell them your looking for parts for a Volvo 260 
series with either a B28F or B27F engine (1978-1983 this should help 
once they hear its a Delorean walls go up for some reason).  
Unfortunatly for me with the exchange rate and duty and waiting time 
it is sometimes easier to buy them at a Volvo dealer(Canada).  But if 
I lived in the States I would only buy from the Delorean vendors, 
just because you know you will get the right part and help you need.

There are TWO oil pressure sender units. One is a spring loaded piston
device that lights the oil light. It lives on the left side of the
motor and is the one you got. The other lives by the oil filter and
runs the oil pressure gauge. It is a large round shaped thing. Volvo
wouldn't know about it, only the one on the left side which is prone
to leak. This should teach you that it is always better to deal with
the Delorean venders whenever you can. If you had to order it you
might just as well order it from one of them. They would have sent you
what you REALLY needed. The one you got in Autozone will make the oil
pressure gauge actually work correctly. If you try to use an oil
filter other than Perflux you might have to use a small angle fitting
to get a little more room. Next time when you talk to a Volvo dealer
tell them the engine is a PRV-6 B28 F. That they will recognize.
Black Again works well on the black plastic. Scratches can be removed
with polishing compound.

I found the manufacturer's name in an archived post after the original
message was sent. Moderator was nice enough to cut & paste it in. I'm
just glad I didn't have to lay in the driveway in the rain to find it!

I could swear my gears are metal, not plastic. After the weather
breaks I'll verify that (have been mistaken about my little silver car
before...)

Was your spindle cable wound with normal left wheel rotation or
against it? Mine is wound the wrong way, which caused it to unwind
rather catastrophically at 80 mph. When the repair was spliced in, I
ran solder all the way down into the housing to prevent future
unwinding. The remaining original cable is now just a stub (with a
square receiver on the end) so it doesn't need to flex to install
around the lower control arm & spring. A solid shaft (square ended),
permanently attached to the wheel disc, is inserted straight from the
outside. Works excellently so far...

Also, was your lubrication hole right side up or upside down? Mine
points towards the pavement.

I agree with you fully UNLESS an xRef part is better than one from a
DeLo vendor. Those are of course very few and far between. FelPro
valve cover gaskets do come to mind (rubber vs paper). I also prefer
single piece heater core shutoff valves over the OEM style (no
external linkage between the diaphragm and butterfly plate). But the
vast majority of DeLorean parts are best (and easiest) delivered to
your front door from a vendor.
