Found out it was the CAT blocked or clogged, whatever, anyone know where to get a bypass"test pipe" in the U.S, other than going to the muffler shop? Baime. Number #50, is the 1964 Pontiac GTO, and mentions John DeLorean on several points. Then on page 226, the featurette is continued with 50 years of "Cool things that had no impact whatsoever." They are... - the yellow line that marks the first down - cryogenic freezing - moon landing - BlackBerry - golf carts - wet T-shirt contests - the DeLorean - Twinkies - plasma TV's - Hot Weels - Department of Homeland Security I must say, throughout the years (even during the DeLorean scandal), Playboy has kept a positive image of the car, maintaining its coolness, unlike some other popular magazines. I mean, come on, our cars are listed among wet T-shirt contests and the moon landing. Could we ask for anything better than that! Never paid any attention to that relay because mine's a 5 speed (erroneously assumed Ramon's was too) but: Isn't this yet ANOTHER example of driving a DeLorean from a well placed jumper in the relay compartment? Several other systems can be temporarily forced on in an emergency: -Fuel pump -Headlights -Cooling fans (can jump otterstat too) -Windshield wipers (jump under dash) -Ignition/Hot Start relay (easiest to jump directly to the coil from the jump start post) -Can also swap failed Main Relay with Accessory Relay Of course ground connections at the far end of any circuit can pose their own problems. Every owner should familiarize him/herself with the electrical system BEFORE something fails on the side of the road. Not only will that make diagnosis faster and easier, but it may well facilitate a workable solution to get the car home. Most contemporary This is absolutely true in my case. I installed an Alpine head unit, and had to re-wire the speaker lines directly, and bypass the harness. BTW, my local electronic supply shop has the same nine-pin harnesses for a few bucks. I'll check it out next time I'm there. Sorry, Bob, I don't think it's necessary to charge $13 for a $4 cable, when the "wire code translations" are all available on either the Mid-State DMC site (http://www.midstatedmc.com/parts/radioplug.html) or my page when I installed my radio: http://www.eskin.net/radioharness.html. -Hank #1619 ________________________________________________________________________ ________________________________________________________________________ Message: 7 Date: Wed, 31 Dec 2003 08:01:52 -0800 From: Phil Priestley <phil@xxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxx> Subject: Re: The Great DeLorean Key Disaster On Dec 30, 2003, at 5:52 AM, cruznmd wrote: > To my knowledge, DMCH will not only sell the blank, but have them cut > for you if you request it. > > > My two cents worth on the key issue. Every domestic flange I've ever seen is 3 bolt triangular. Since your converter is already melted, why not simply gut it and use the empty case as a bypass? It isn't good for anything else anyway. Otherwise, congrats on sorting out everything forward of the Y pipe! I had my original and a nifty blank from Ken K. that lights up. I asked the wise old master key craftsman to make me a copy. He looked it over slowly for about a minute, and asked what it went to. I don't suppose this matters, since I had the original and was supplying the blank for him to carve. But I told him. Then he asked where the car was. I told him it was in storage (it's winter), and he said I would have to drive it to his shop before he could cut the key for me. I asked why, and he said he wanted to make sure the copy would work. I asked him to cut it anyway, I'm sure it would be fine. And he flat out refused! So off to Wal-Mart I go. . . (Some small businesses ruin themselves.) Also a car with that few miles should show almost no wear anywhere. Look it over for wear spots. Have a trusted mechanic check it out also. You should never purchase a used car without doing so. A good mechanic should be able to tell if it truly shows the kind of wear a car with 4800 miles should have. If the speedometer is not working then of course the mileage is suspect. The same goes if you see a lot of new speedo parts like an angle drive, lower cable, or support bracket. This would mean it was broken and recently fixed. At 4,800 miles the car should stilll have the origional NCT tires on it. If it does you can measure the remaining tread. It should be no less than 8/32 for that mileage. You can look at the Lambda counter. It should not read more than 16. Look at the interior and the pedals. If there is a lot of wear than that should make you suspicious. Get the vin # and call the nearest Delorean vender. He can tell you if any parts or service work was done and if service work was done they usually record the mileage. See if there are ANY repair bills or work tickets from anyone with the car. They should have the mileage when work was done. Look at the title. Try a title search for previous titles on the car and the recorded mileage at the times of sale. In the end don't overpay for a "low mileage" car. What matters more is condition and how it was taken care of. If it was sitting for 15 years figure doing a complete fuel system and a complete brake system and clutch. Also figure on recharging the A/C, the cooling system, tires, recalls, updates, struts, battery, and tune-up. To make the car roadable and RELIABLE, if you do it yourself, can cost between $5,000 to $7,000. Cosmetic things like headliners, repainting the facias, leather seats, carpets, cracked binnacle, missing or broken trim will raise the cost even more. Before you buy the car budget these additional costs plus any tools you may need and a place to work on it.
