The DCS09 Prelude starts in just over 4 Weeks! Make your hotel and airline reservations now! Day 4 of PCS09 Prelude. THE DRIVING TOUR - A full day of activities. Tuesday is designed to provide a very interesting and fun driving tour of the west side of Las Vegas. This driving tour route is very unique because the road actually goes into the mountains on the NW side of Las Vegas and does a U turn and comes out on the SW side of Las Vegas. This should make it an east route to follow! The driving tour and site seeing should take 2 - hours. See map on website. Make sure you give it sufficient time to load. 8AM to 9AM Meet at the McDonalds at Charleston and Rainbow. This is on the NW side of the city. It is about 3 miles from the Palace Station. See map on website. This McDonald has a 30 foot high milkshake and a 35 foot high box of french fries. This is a good photo op. You can get breakfast or coffee here. 9AM -10 AM Leave McDonalds west bound on Charleston and head towards the mountains on Charleston which becomes Route 159. The road will take you past the Red Rock Casino. Red Rock Casino At about 10 miles you will be in the mountains just west of Las Vegas. Once inside this valley, you no longer see Las Vegas. You will be in the native desert. You will also see some of the Red Rock layers in the mountains. Red Rock Canyon There is a road that goes to Red Rock Canyon. However, there is a $20 charge. It also takes about 1 hour and is about 30 miles. You are welcome to take this side trip. Spring Mountain Ranch State Park You will see a sign to this State Park. It has wild donkeys, horses and other animals. It has a pavilion where UNLV and local talent present Broadway plays for $10 per person (at night only). It is great entertainment at a good price. You can get tickets at Palace Station. This park is free and has some great desert view. You may want to stop for a while and see this great park. Blue Diamond You will see a sign to an area called Blue Diamond. This is a neighborhood enclave with trees that are spring fed. One of the few remaining spring feed forests just west of Las Vegas. An exclusive area where almost no additional development is permitted. You can get a view of what Las Vegas looked like when it was undeveloped an was just a bunch of Willow trees. 10 Am - 11 AM Cactus Joe's This very unique garden and artifact center is on the north side of the road. If you get to route 160, you just missed it. This is free and well worth stopping and touring. This is a scheduled stop on the driving tour. You will see stuff here that you will see no where else. You can see lots of fossils, chunks of brightly colored glass that are 2 feet in diameter. Also-"Side ways Sam" A dog that had a brain injury from being hit by a car and the local vet was able to save. Sam now walks sideways. You will not be disappointed by this stop. Self Sufficient "white" house complex At Buffalo and 160, if you go north 2 blocks you will see a "white" house with a wind mill and other structures. This is a large private residence that is self sufficient, with wind power, fruit trees, green house and other self sufficient building. You can somewhat see this on Goggle Earth. The structure is on 5 acres. It makes you wonder who and what is going on there. Climb a Mountain. (e.i hill) Also at Buffalo and 160 (SE corner) is a hill that has been made into a park. You can climb that paths to the top. Takes about 30 minutes. Great views and photo op. Turn Left At Rainbow. It is time for lunch so you need to head to the restaurant. When you get to Rainbow (route 595) make a left turn and go north to Tropicana. about 5 miles. Turn Right At Tropicana. Once you get to Tropicana, turn right and go about 1.5 miles to Cameron st. Make a left and you will see McMullan's Pub. Parking is on the north side (back of the building). 12 NOON to 2 PM Lunch at McMullan's Irish Pub located just west of the Orleans casino at 4650 W. Tropicana. This is great Pub with lots of Irish decor and style. The waitresses have great Irish accents. Very good food and reasonable prices. 2 PM - 11 PM Afternoon and evening activities.
