Mike and all --
it's been a while since my original post about start
problems after I replaced the fuel pump and I finally had a chance
to check on the car today.   It most likely is indeed the acumulator
and Keith agreed with me that the fragile diaphragm could have
been
damaged by the increased fuel pressure.  For all I know, the
acumulator
 is original.
The cheap solution for now is to trigger the fuel pump with the key
until pressure builds up in the acumulator and I know that
eventually I'll replace it.
FWIW, he offered to trade me for an old but reliable Mercedes sedan
with a turbo-diesel.  HAHAHA and tempting....
