Marc,

Ford had a truck prototype using compressed air.  Braking drove an air 
compressor (much easier than a fluid).

Resultled in about a 10% fuel economy savings.   Very simple to design 
and build.

However, Ford has opted for an electric hybrid because it gives about a 
15% fuel savings.
