Dead shorts -- when your battery is grounding out through the entire
car -- generally don't create sparks or enough heat to blow a fuse, as
a short through a single wire does. But they will kill your battery in
short order. Happened to my DeLo when the terminal on a line to the
back of the starter solenoid touched the block (that's why I now run a
6" pigtail from the solenoid to a less congested junction in mid air,
wrapped in electrical tape of course). Happened on my AMC when the
automatic choke supply line grounded against the side of the
carburetor (alternator idiot light glowed dimly, and it couldn't
recharge the battery).
