Totally, and utterly sweet! For anyone who doesn't know what this is,
it's a casting of the Hotwheels toy, model "Turismo", as the sale
says. These are the Hotwheels cars that were based off of the DeLorean
prototype. Here is a picture of the final product:
http://mybronco2.com/hotwheels/images/turismo.JPG
There are 3 paint schemes. The red racing version above, a yellow one
with purple and orange side graphics, and a maroon car (the rare one I
don't have). And they come with 1 of 3 interior colors of Black, Tan,
or Purple. The toy differs from the car, because it has the rear
quarter glass, and vents deleted, as well as 2 arrows embossed over
the rear tail lights. The front hood was changed to be elevated where
the relief lines in the hood are, as well as a forced induction hood.
On the front, the grille has been deleted, and covered with the hood
extending down in a clam shell design, covering the highbeams of the
headlights.
The underside design of this toy car is an exact of the final
production toy. And the interior of the production toy is a carbon
copy of Proto 1, down to the knee/crash pad that extends across the
dash, to the exact same pattern on the seats.
Not bad as a collector's item for Hot Wheels people. But potentially a
rather historical piece for DeLorean people. I always assumed that
Mattel didn't want to pay licensing fees to manufacture a toy DeLorean
car. But unless this thing is a good forgery, then there is no
question that Mattel pulled the plug on the project, and modified the
body, to avoid making a DeLorean. The casting dates on the toys are
all 1979, and come from either the Malaysia, or Hong Kong plants. 1979
was years before production, let alone 10-20-82, so what gives?
Yet another DeLorean mystery...
