Well, that was the theory for a while.  However, the PAG and Ester oils used
with 134 actually kinda 'soak in' to the hoses, and help them act as more of
a barrier than once thought.

Getting back on track, R-134a poses a great threat still, because of
older cars like the DeLorean. Without a proper retrofit which involves
the installation of barrier hoses to replace the original rubber ones,
R-134a will simply bleed out thru the porous hoses. Kind in the same
way as a latex ballon will shrink over a few days. Which seems to be
why modern cars use so many more aluminum pipes, rather than all hoses.
