Generally, you can tell springs are bad because, when properly functioning
correct shock absorbers are installed, the vehicle is at an improper ride
height.

 

Marc is correct.  Springs last a long time.  Generally, you see 'tail
dragger' cars with bad rear springs from repeated heavy loads or towing.

I'm doing a DIY shock/strut (possible springs) and new bushings, control 
arms, etc., on the front and rear suspension pieces.

Is it necessary (in general automotive repair terms) to replace the springs 
while replacing the shocks & struts?

What would necessitate a spring replacement besides aesthetic reasons?
