I can also lock my doors with them open.  It may depend on the particular
car.  I've also seen cars where the rods are too tightly adjusted, and when
you close the door, the lock mechanism 'bumps' and locks the door.
 
Can Houston simply cut a key based on the VIN?

I tried it myself, i'm owner of vin16105 and it's not possible to 
lock the car with the doorlock switches when the doors are open.

I didn't knew that there are DeLorean's who are able to do so.
