Actually, if the Bible is to be believed, some Jewish authorities were
very keen on having Jesus killed (long before the scene with Pilate).
It is true their Law prevented doing such themselves, thus the
involvement of the Romans. Pilate is a somewhat tragic character in
this drama -- by my reading he tried every way he could imagine to
avoid handing down a death sentence. Barrabas seems to have been his
ace in the hole: faced with a choice between having Barrabas or Jesus
running around loose, he must have figured the crowd gathered (which
was NOT the entire population of Jerusalem, or even a sizeable portion
thereof -- his courtyard was only so big) would surely pick Jesus.
Not having seen Mel Gibson's movie, I do not know how it squares with
the Biblical timeline of the event. Starting with the rooster crowing
-- sunrise @ 6:00 am or so -- you've got 3 hours max to squeeze in two
hearings before Pilate and one before Herod (presumably after they've
arisen, eaten breakfast, etc), a flogging, travel between three
palaces (Ciaphas, Pilate, and Herod) and Golgatha, and the crucifixion
itself. There's a possibility his movie is actually LONGER than Jesus'
actual experience.
