Sorry to tell you this, but I'm a non-smoker, I like clean air, and I've no
problem with anyone who does happen to smoke around me. With the
exception of when I'm eating at a table, smoking doesn't bother me. And all
smokers that I've encountered, actaully show me the courtesy of waiting until
I finish, untill they light up. Of course if I dine with non-smokers, this is a moot
point anyways, since restaurants do afterall provide non-smoking sections...
Of course there is the exception of those cheap-ass-$1.99 cigars that idiots
pickup at the gas stations out here. Nasty, greenleaf, rancid tobacco.
The no smoking laws that NYC has passed for public restaurants, bars, and
clubs is perhaps the stupidest thing I've ever seen. It's been proven over in
Ireland that when smokers go outside to to light up, their non-smoking friends
will naturally go outside to follow them. So what was the point anyway? Clubs
and bars do have ventalation, so it's not like anyone is gonna suffocate. And
besides that, here in Las Vegas where we do still allow people to have fun in
be comfortably be themselves, we're reaping the benefits. Part of my job
deals with the Hospitality Industry, and I can certainly tell you that tourism has
most certainly been good. 40 million people passed thru the airport last year
alone. And that doesn't count the people from California whom are our #1
domestic tourist base. And New York keeps wondering why their tourist base
keeps declining...
The point to all this is simple. It's ignorant to ban people from smoking. If you
want to go strictly by the healt merits alone, I'd suggest looking at prohibition.
We banned alcohol, and many people became binge drinkers because they
could not consume alcohol in a leisurely manner. Only when they could find it,
and they goruged themselves because of it's rarity, like some aboriginal
peoples in certain parts of the world do with food. If the country keeps
banning smoking, we are going to create a new generation of chain smokers.
Many people will take up the habbit simply to anger non-smokers with such
militant attitudes, and will smoke even more, because of the lack of
opprotunities to do so.
As for the American Cancer Society, I'd like to buy them all a nice warm cup
opf STFU. People know the risks, and they're willing to take them. So who do
these people think that they are, let alone anyone else to tell smokers that
they are not smart enough to judge for themselves what they want to do with
their lives? No smoking in workplace offices and enviornments? Sure, not a
problem, since the big concern here is to create an inclusive enviornment for
workers. To reduce health risks? No, I'm no buying it. Lots of studies have
been performed over the years, and some interesting results have been
found, that people such as the ACS, ALA, and other organizations with
anti-smoking, policital agendas have quietly declined to acknowlege.

What's interesting about this, is the fact that even though smoking does
cause DNA mutations, this enzyme can repair the damange to the DNA, thus
preventing tumors in patients with high-levels of OGG. Even more interesting
have been the genetic tests that are discovering that Europeans, and Native
Americans who have longstanding cultures based around tobbaco
consumption have already developed higher concentrations of this enzyme.
Which exmplains why African Americans have the highest risk of all, when
compared to Latios, and then followed by Caucasians. Taking all of these
facts into account, only 15% of smokers nationwide will ever get lung cancer.
And worse yet are the political implications. People, wheather they are Stock
Traders on Wall Street, or Manual Laborers all have people in their
demographic whom smoke. So, if a puff or two helps them get through a day
of stress, or a lifetime of hardship, then who cares? Let them enjoy
themselves. And if you don't find the place where you're at to be offering a
pleasant experience because you don't like to be around those who smoke,
then leave. There are plenty of restaurants, and a few clubs that offer
non-smoking areas that cater to folks just like yourself.
Hell, I have to put up with enough crap from enviornmentalists who want to
keep vintage cars like my DeLorean off the road, because of "enviornmental
concerns". So to anyone out there who smokes, know that I'm with you all
they way on this one. Banning smoking IMO does encroach upon personal
freedoms.
