I've been lurking on this exchange for a while, but I can't let this
pass unremarked.

Sorry, no. ADD really does exist. It's a real live problem.
Unfortunately, there are way too many pseudo-professionals calling
every possible behavior problem ADD. For 3 years straight, teachers
tried to tell me my younger son was ADD... even though he had none of
the classic symptoms, he was just BORED STIFF in their stupid classes.
and yes, we did consult with actual doctors for a learned opinion on
my son, and there was really no question that the teachers were
blowing smoke.
I've worked with youth, and there really ARE a few kids out there with
bona fide ADD, that require some form of treatment to be fully
functional in school. The drug approach should only be a treatment of
last resort, IMHO... but there are a few cases where it's the right
thing to do.
