intervals go from 40 to 5 seconds?
It sounds like you are low on R-12. The 40 second interval is for if the car is running at idle with the blower on the highest setting during warm weather. So cool weather will shorten that interval and so will running the blower on a slow speed. This would shorten the cycle time, but not to 5 seconds. It sounds like your system is extremely low.
Sometimes leaks can be spotted by just looking for oily/dirty spots. Usually a good amount of refrigerant oil comes out with the refrigerant gas, and then that oil picks up lots of dirt making it easy to see. Check the connections at the back of the compressor. Check the two hose connections on the condenser (looks like another radiator mounted in front of the radiator). Also check the connections around the accumulator visible behind the right front wheel. Turn the steering all the way left and then look behind the tire with a light. The most likely spot here is where the low pressure cycling switch screws onto the accumulator. The accumulator looks like a small-size bare aluminum fire extinguisher and the switch is a knob with some wires coming off the back side.
Also check the front seal of the compressor. Even a good system will leak just a little bit here. Some more than others especially depending on how long the system sits without being used. In particular, look for oil that has been slung off the pulley and onto the fiberglass pontoon. Also look under the engine cover. Some clutch material due to wear is normal, so you should see maybe a faint streak on the fiberglass. But much more indicates a leaky compressor seal. Damn, I'm long winded....
