Walt,

I was very upset reading  the story from your childhood.   You are right 
your health was at risk.   Your reported nausea is exactly the symptoms 
one would expect.

The only part that was missing was what happened to your father. ?

Here are some of the health issues.  A broken pot with leak carbon 
monoxide into the home.  The carbon monoxide build up in your blood over 
night will affect brain development and synapses that formed during the 
previous 24 hours.  High CO levels will cause long term brain damage. ( 
I have testified as an expert in two CO trials).
The brain damage in high level exposure that cause unconsciousness is 
progressive that eventually results in violent behavior.  THere are some 
8000 CO poisoning cases in the US per year.  Was your illiteracy caused 
by CO exposure?  A very good chance?

The second exposure problem was the soot.  Carbon black absorbs all 
kinds of organic and carcinogens and carries them into your lungs.  It 
is risk factor from diesel power equipment in mines.  So you probably 
have an elevated risk of lung cancer.  Good thing you like fresh air and 
don't smoke.  

Lastly, chronic lung disease.  Soot particulate build up in the lungs 
over time and result in tissue scaring and loss of lung elasticity to 
say nothing of alveolar damage.  


I don't know why you father made this decision. If it was because of a 
lack of a "living wage"  I would be even more OUTRAGED.  Let me know.  I 
can add this story to my book.
