Yep -- that's how you do it. Pre-ignition caused by mixture exploding before a spark hits it. Can eliminate by reducing volatility of mixture (higher octane), lowering chamber temp (cooler plugs) or moving spark farther from TDC. Unfortunately last method also cuts down on power.
