" It was implied to show that he doesn't know anything about plastic. I don't see anything sarcastic about it. It may have been sarcasm if indeed there was no such thing as plastic. Then, you say, "Plastic? There is no such thing!" Then you could gleefully jaunt about singing, "Eveeeeerything you know is wrong! Black is white, up is down and short is long". Then at least you have some bit of irony, plus the callback of a joke that has recently passed. You want to talke about being wrongly mistrustful of plastic applications, let's talk about the use of thermoplastics in the fuse block, which any engineer with half a brain would have made out of thermosets. I'm an engineer and I don't "immmediately construe" it as an adjective. Its more likely that only material engineers (at work) think this. Oh ya, and you. "now I know" what?
