We went riding around and watched the temperature gauge fluctuate quickly from 1/4 scale to 3/4 scale. We were both sure at the time that the problem was a bad electrical connection. Then we looked in his coolant reservoir bottle and saw that it was empty. What had happened is that the car was intermittently over-heating due to a low coolant level. So check your coolant level. Now for the long story on radiator caps: Prior to this Tom replaced the radiator cap with a new one. The OEM caps are 15 lbs, but that size isn't available any more, apparently. The closest thing he could find is a 16 lb cap which seemed close enough. Then I went to the NJ Spring Social and saw an 18 lb cap on Rob Grady's car. I asked what the deal was with that because 18 is so much higher when a 16 would do. Rob said that it had something to do with the 16 lb caps not fitting properly. Well sure enough, we found this to be the problem on Tom's car. The 16 lb cap has a loose valve that doesn't close until the system is under pressure. The 18 lb cap has a valve that is spring-loaded closed all the time (it will still open under vacuum). So Tom shopped around a bit and found a 16 lb cap that has a spring-loaded valve. Problem fixed.
