I too have swapped a few e-mails with a guy who isn't part of the technical team on this project. To this end, I don't think he himself knows completely what this "magic box" does. My own experience leads me to believe (from the statement that the batteries will be fully charged at the end of the test) that the batteries are required for high current drain (accellerating) but there's a device in the car that is capable of generating current at a higher level than is required to run the car at highway speeds, thus being able to top up the batteries. This in itself is not unusual. What I would caution against is seeing this device as something new. The car may well be driven by an electric motor, but this does not make it an "electric car" per se - in the same way as many diesel locomotives use electric motors to drive the wheels, and the electricity is generated by the diesel engine (why? - because you couldn't build a big enough clutch!) IF the car is run solely on electricity, it will not require refuelling in any way other than plugging it in to the wall. The claim that something on-board generates electricity as the car is driving is tantamount to perpetual motion, unless it involves solar power, wind power or some other kind of fuel. This is my "sticking point" and I'd dearly love to be proved wrong! In my exchange with them, I was categorically told "nothing is used in the car other than electricicty" - which sounds great, but could mean anything. The only true ways of storing electrical energy are capacitors and inductors, and these are only useful for minute time periods. A battery stores chemical energy. A more exotic method uses flywheels which store kinetic energy. The petrol in your tank is chemical energy which your alternator turns into electrical energy... can you see where I'm going with this? It is suggested the device which generates the power to run the car works purely from the cars own motion. If this were true, this would be perpetual motion. Given a budget of a million dollars, I'm sure I could make a DeLorean powered by an electric motor that would be self-sustaining for many hundreds of miles, but it'd be doing it by hiding some sort of fuelled generator, possibly where the fuel tank would be.
