I took the sender apart again and held it to my ear while running the float up & down. What I heard sounded like magnetic reed switches clicking along the way. So I hooked it to an ohm meter to confirm my suspicion. Sure enough, the output stepped incrementally at a rather low resolution. What this means is that the output is (in a crude sense) digital. By counting the steps, I can see that at best the gauge can only show 1/8 step increments. The only thing to smooth out the readings is the sloshing motion of the fuel in the tank and the slow response time of the dash gauge. It's cheap, but simple & durable. I got the following readings: (in ohms) 4/4 - 92 7/8 - 90 3/4 - 58 5/8 - 52 1/2 - 47 3/8 - 42 1/4 - 25 0 - 0 >From these measurements it is apparent that the designer purposely fudged the output to be weighted toward center scale.
