RE: [DMCForum] more sound-proofing questions

A life time or two ago I built show vehicles for sound-off competition.
This was when Dynamat was new to the market to give you an idea how long
ago. At the time, all of the people I knew in competition thought it
looked
a lot like roofing paper only thicker. As an experiment in my competition
vehicle, I gutted the entire interior and layered everything with the
black
paper and in other crevices used the acoustical foam.

The results were nothing short of amazing. In fact, it was so quiet my
ears
literally hurt when I was inside. It was nothing like an anechoic chamber
of course, but it was a dramatic difference. Two things to note about
doing
this though. Make sure the foam you use is never near where it could get
wet as it is a sponge and will smell really bad. A competition friend
filled his doors and it was a huge mistake, not to mention a rust
accelerator.

The second thing to make sure is do not use the readily available spray
glues that you can buy just anywhere as when the vehicle gets hot all your
work will be destroyed. Also, you will be much more able to hear the
really
annoying little sounds like wind noise in that area you can neither pin
point nor remedy. I can't remember what glue we used after I had to re-do
most of my truck.

Walt, you inspired me to think of a possible automotive use for
something I use at work every day.

Dooes anyone know if anyone has used the flat back of the rear "seat" to
put acoustical foam inside? Not only would this dampen engine noise but
it would also reduce reverberation of noise inside the car (i.e. stereo
sounds better) and it would be totally removeable.

Just curious. I was thinking of using this in my truck (noisy beast) in
combination with some of the less-expensive products from b-quiet. Right
now, though, I'm driving a Buick Regal, which is surprisingly quiet.
What does GM use? Ha ha.

Best of luck to those in Virginia, Pennsylvania, et al as the snow and
ice hit.

Farrar in New Orleans
