This piqued my interest, so I did a google search for "6th commandment
hebrew kill". As I was expecting, I found this:
http://www.middletownbiblechurch.org/doctrine/6command.htm
They may not be 100% correct, and if you want to tear them apart
remember that I didn't write this page, but they do answer the
question pretty well, I think.
Other results on the first page:
http://www.hissheep.org/messages/6-thou_shalt_not_kill.html
http://www.religioustolerance.org/chr_10c9.htm
http://www.godandscience.org/apologetics/notkill.html
http://members.tripod.com/jbrooks2/THOU_SHALT_NOT_KILL.html <-- this
one offers a different viewpoint

I didn't just take the ones I like, but I did remove the debates and
blogs. There were some interesting points in them, but if you're that
interested, go read them yourself... :P
Not all of these agree, and I don't think a single one is
unbiased/objective. I would, however, take this as some evidence that
the word would be more correctly translated as 'murder'.
And before you get to make a wiseass comment, yes this may mean that
the Bible is translated incorrectly. Big surprise.
Anyway, I'd say yes, killing in self-defense, war, or to eat (animals)
would be justified. Not desirable, but not something to ruin your life
over.
And no, I'd rather not kill people either. If I had a choice, I'd
rather shoot for the legs or arms (provided I had a gun, I'm only 17)
and stop them so the authorities can take them away, rather than kill
them myself. Even if the Bible specifically said that it was okay to
kill someone stealing something of yours, I would try to avoid it.
Nobody's advocating shooting anyone who might possibly be a thread.
And yes you could read Ryan's statement as 'anyone who you think might
be a threat'. Does that give you the power to decide what a threat is?
Yes. Is that inherently bad? No. If someone gets into a stance that
would easily allow them to lunge at me or do a leg sweep or something,
I would consider that threatening.
Don't expect people to have to qualify every single statement they
make. "Aggressive moves" may have differing meanings to different
people, but only a real nutcase would use it as an excuse to shoot
people simple because they can.
