Eh, well...Not really.
Since there are no CFC's in the R-134a formula, it doesn't easily
break apart O3 chains that make up Ozone. That and I believe that it's
not supposed to last as long in the enviornment. However, it is a VERY
nast greenhouse gas. It doesn't disappate, and hangs out in the
atmosphere, collecting, and storing BTUs.
In the end, it was a great idea to move away from aresol cans that
used CFC propellants. However, sulphur in the atmosphere can just as
easily lead to ozone depletion. Marine diesels are one source, but
volcanic activity can have quite a devestating effect too. I forget
the process, but the sulphur has to become VERY cold, and then needs
to break apart to bond with O3. Hence why the ozone hole in the Antarctic.
Getting back on track, R-134a poses a great threat still, because of
older cars like the DeLorean. Without a proper retrofit which involves
the installation of barrier hoses to replace the original rubber ones,
R-134a will simply bleed out thru the porous hoses. Kind in the same
way as a latex ballon will shrink over a few days. Which seems to be
why modern cars use so many more aluminum pipes, rather than all hoses.
