Yep. Unfortunately, when you get pulled over you pretty well have to
kiss up, even if the cop is clueless. There are enough laws on the
books that any of us could be written huge fines and just generally
harassed over nothing.
For example, had you replied, "Sorry pal, there is no such law. Bug
off.", his response could have been:
"Well, let's just get out the tread meter here. Looks like the tread
on your tires is too thin. That's a $200 fine. How about the tint
meter? What's that, your windows aren't tinted? Well, why don't you
sit tight for half an hour while I measure them with my meter, just to
be sure. By the way, your wiper blades are illegal. See this small
crack in the rubber? How are you supposed to see if it rains? That's
$100. Next, we're going to check to make sure your lights work, and
we'll check the aim of your headlights. Ah ha, one of your bulbs is
burnt out. That's $75. What? You say this isn't fair? You're calling
your lawyer? Step out of the car, sir. I said, STEP OUT OF THE CAR."
Piss off the wrong cop, and the response could be worse: "Well, well,
well. You're going to jail for this, you little punk. (pulls out a
baggie of coke. Drops it behind your seat. Picks it back up.)"
