What does the alternator belt have to do with running the CAR? I dunno, 
you're the diesel expert. You'd have to ask Bob why he cut the belt when 
the pulley spun freely and he only had about 350 miles to go in his 
ancient diesel Mercedes with no alternator and a dying battery. Maybe he 
didn't know any better and figured "Well, if the alternator's seized up 
I should cut the belt."
Different subject: I presume when you say "Z" you're referring to the 
old Datsun sports car. I didn't know Datsun made diesel Zs. What year is 
that car?
